There is no visual advantage to posting images larger than our optimum 640px. size and it places a higher demand on our server. Resizing images only takes a few seconds with any photo manipulation program and I believe Photobucket provides an easy means of reducing image size.
I am elated that we have so many members who are willing to take the time to share their vacation experiences with everyone. However, even on a semi-dedicated server there are certain limitations and we are starting to have a negative effect on our site?s overall performance.
Noah is working on fixing our image size restrictions so in the very near future any images in excess of 640 pixels will not display; instead, you will see an error message instructing you to reduce the size of the image. In the mean time, I would appreciate it if you would take this opportunity to resize your images to their optimum size for our message board, which is no larger than 640 pixels wide.
I believe that there is a resizing option at Photobucket and most of the other free image hosting sites. If not, and you do not have a program to resize your images, you can download a free image size manipulation program here:
Besides resizing, it will allow you to crop, straighten and a few other things.
If we have pictures in old posts, before the size restriction was in place…..would you like us to go into photobucket and resize those? Would that help?

I don’t have a problem with the fact you are putting a size restriction on the photos, but why 600 pix? Photobucket only allows 640×480 and 320×240 (and this is for a paying customer, the free accounts only size by %).. so you can’t resize them once they are in there to a size that works decent. It would have been nicer to use 640 pix..
BTW, there is absolutely no overhead on your server to reference an image from photobucket or other hosting site no matter how large the photo is. If you were hosting them, then yes, there is overhead. The only overhead is on photobucket’s server and the viewer’s own internet connection.
Again, your board, you can of course do as you want. I just wanted to point out a few issues and misconceptions. And it would be VERY helpful if the limitation was set to 640.. instead of 600.
Thanks..
Just tried entering some photos the same way I always have with the assistance of Photobucket and I received the following message:
“Image tags restricted : Image urls can now only be entered with the image button.”
Anybody else experience any problems lately?

I guess they don’t want to have many pics on the forums, I know I am not inclined to post anymore pics until they resolve the issues..
I had several messages with Scubachar about this yesterday and he said “they are working on it” so we’ll see.
Yes, there are problems at the moment with the ability to post pictures, as well as the appearance of pictures in older posts (if they exceed 600 pixels in width). Noah, our webmaster, has been notified of the problems and I’m sure he will be able to fix it. Please be patient.
I’m sure that anyone who has spent any time whatsoever on this site, knows very well that we want pictures to be posted, since we go out of our way urging, almost to the point of nagging
One thing I will say is that I posted many pictures using the Image Icon until just recently…..if the Image Icon was working properly, it wouldn’t take long at all. Again, this is a temporary problem and I’m confident it will be resolved.
gd, by the way, when you tried to paste your image tag into your post like you always have, it was asking you to use the Image Icon instead…..so it will just mean you’ll have an extra step, but as I just said, the icon isn’t working at the moment.
The problems are simply stemming from the fact that many people have been posting some really huge pictures on the site, which I guess, is affecting the performance and speed of the website and page loads and such. Sure, the pictures are externally housed, but for reasons way beyond my knowledge base, it still slow things down if they are too big. When Joe reads this, I hope he can explain it better.
Things will be fixed, rest assured

I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize this and didn’t mean to refer to you wrongly. Now I know
I understand the large image issue, however, it really only has an effect on the people reading a thread with large images. So, in short, I don’t have a problem putting a size limit on things, lets just choose a size that is more “common” for people using photobucket. 640 instead of 600.
The problem with the image icon usage (even once it works correctly) is that it requires several clicks along with copying and pasting to insert one picture. It also puts the tag at the end of your message, so if you want it moved, you have to cut and paste it. It also mangles the name so it is not recognizable when you have several images so you know which image is which. Please take these all as suggested reasons why the image icon is not the best option which is how I mean them.
The nicer way to insert images for most people is to use photobucket’s or other hosting site’s IMG tag it creates for you and you simply copy and paste that into your message where you want it. I can easily add 20 images within a minute and with limited clicking. It wouldn’t take anything to “pre-check” the images at the time of preview/submit for size restrictions as you are already checking in other places and for the IMG tag usage.
I would be happy to help work through the workflow issues with CAG as I’ve been developing business applications and Web applications since ’85 and understand how things can and should work for a great user experience.
Again, I like the CAG site, but the type of road blocks that I see are being put in place can really frustrate people and I realize that is not the intended effect, but that is what will happen. If it frustrates someone like me, I am sure it will frustrate many less technical users as well.
BTW, I realize it is being worked on and these messages weren’t meant to be impatient, I was simply responding and confirming that there are issues and I am having the same ones.
Thanks for your help!
Rich
I knew you were frustrated, and as I said, rightly so.
I have spent quite a bit of time since yesterday trying to figure out exactly what is happening, so I’m frustrated too. As you know, I couldn’t even see that the larger pictures in people’s posts were getting smaller. I thank you for pointing that out to me. I had no idea that what I see would be different than what everyone else can see.
I’ve really enjoyed our posts back in forth dealing with this problem, cause it’s obvious you really know what you’re talking about, and I feel like I’m learning something as I go along.
I spent a little bit of time on the Photobucket site yesterday trying to see if something over there had changed. Evidently, they have introduced a new way of uploading pictures onto the site along with some other new things, and people on their forums are really mad, so they seem to be changing a few things back to the way they were. I read through some of their message forums, just trying to get a feel for it all.
What I did learn is that, exactly as you said, there are now very limited options for choosing the size of your picture that you want to resize or even now to upload on Photobucket. For message boards, it’s either 640 x 480 (which won’t work here now) or 320 x 240, which really does seem small. The only other option would be for people to resize their pictures themselves on their own computers to no bigger than 600 pixels BEFORE uploading to Photobucket. I just don’t think that many people will want to do that.
So, I think we’re both on the same page. I totally agree with everything you are saying……I just don’t make those decisions, nor do I even understand what’s all involved.
I’m sure we’ll be able to make it all work.

Being that you BOTH know a ton more than me, could you maybe help me out? I posted all my pics onto SnapFish.com. How could I direct you to my photos, by way of my trip report?? Can I post a URL or something? I want to share my pics!!!
Note to the webmaster, I too would like to see it go back to the prior way of posting.
Sorry that some people are posting such big pictures.
Good luck on getting it fixed.
