Usually you need look no further than the beach directly adjacent to your hotel to shore dive and observe colorful fish and interesting reef formations. Look for darker areas of the water, which usually denote reef structures below that will make for more interesting shore diving.

Many species of fish and marine life in the Cayman Islands tend to frequent shorelines areas for food and shelter so you can expect to see almost as many species of fish and corals on shore dives as you will at most moored boat dive sites. Common fish sightings on all Cayman Islands shore dives include: Snapper, Grouper, Grunts, Parrot fish, Silverside and dozens more, in all stages of development from juvenile to adult.

Corals of every imaginable shape and size in over 100 species colonize in close proximity to Cayman Islands shores. Black coral can be seen on or near the walls and mini walls beginning at depths near 100 feet.

Shore diving in Grand Cayman can be broken down into four distinct and diverse areas of the island: Seven Mile Beach, West Bay, Northside and East End. Primarily owing to the distances involved in reaching the best parts of the reef along Grand Cayman’s southern shore we have omitted this area.

Turtle Reef at Lighthouse Point and North Wall at Cobalt Coast are two Cayman shore dives you do not want to miss. Shore Diving Tip:
Snorkel out to the area you plan to dive, descend there and dive back towards your point of entry. This is not only good air management it makes for a safe dive profile as you gradually ascsend throughout your entire dive.

Cayman Islands Shore Diving by Region
Seven Mile Beach shore diving encompasses the area from Eden Rock to West Bay, up to and including the famous Northwest Point area accessible at Lighthouse Point.

Northside—with the exceptions noted, is primarily surrounded by shallow lagoons, which necessitate either a very long swim or a very shallow dive.

East End is typically the windward side of Grand Cayman, creating the most challenging sea conditions, particularly from shore. However, by closely monitoring Cayman Weather and Sea Conditions you may catch a window of opportunity into some of Grand Cayman’s most unexplored shore diving.
