Shore diving in the Cayman Islands can be an extremely rewarding activity. For the cost of a tank rental — averaging US$12, you can explore the near shore reefs, mini walls, caverns, caves and chutes; all populated by a myriad of sea life, hundreds of species of coral and thousands of species of fish. While we highly recommend boat diving to conveniently access Cayman’s very best dive sites, an afternoon Cayman shore dive can compliment a morning two tank dive experience. You can save and diversify your diving experience by dedicating a day or two of your weekly dive itinerary to shore dives in the Cayman Islands. Usually you need look no further than the beach directly adjacent to your hotel to shore dive and observe colorful fish and interesting reef formations. Look for darker areas of the water, which usually denote reef structures below that will make for more interesting shore diving.

Many species of fish and marine life in the Cayman Islands tend to frequent shorelines areas for food and shelter so you can expect to see almost as many species of fish and corals on shore dives as you will at most moored boat dive sites. Common fish sightings on all Cayman Islands shore dives include: Snapper, Grouper, Grunts, Parrot fish, Silverside and dozens more, in all stages of development from juvenile to adult.

Corals of every imaginable shape and size in over 100 species colonize in close proximity to Cayman Islands shores. Black coral can be seen on or near the walls and mini walls beginning at depths near 100 feet.

Where to Shore Dive in the Cayman Islands
Shore diving in Grand Cayman can be broken down into four distinct and diverse areas of the island: Seven Mile Beach, West Bay, Northside and East End. Primarily owing to the distances involved in reaching the best parts of the reef along Grand Cayman’s southern shore we have omitted this area.

Their large sturdy entry and exit ladders make shore dives a breeze as you descend into shallow areas perfectly suited for pre shore dive checks. These areas offer some of the most pristine reefs and closest access to wall diving anywhere in the world, as consistently rated by all the major dive publications and review sites.

Wall and Mini Wall Diving from Shore in the Cayman Islands offers spectacular value for divers of all abilities. Knowing where to access the best sites from shore without a marathon swim through choppy seas and climbs over sharp slippery rocks will assure safe and spectacular shore diving. Some mini walls and even walls in Grand Cayman lie less than 60 yards from shore, making the Cayman Islands one of the only dive destinations in the world where sheer vertical walls plunging to thousands of feet can be easily accessed so close to shore. This is NOT to say that you can simply jump in anywhere, swim out to sea and expect a fun and satisfactory dive; like anywhere else you need to know where to enter and exit.

We have compiled a listing of the most easily accessible dramatic pristine walls and mini walls on Grand Cayman that can be dived from shore. Note that wind and sea conditions play a large factor in the overall accessibilty and enjoyment of any dive site so always check current Cayman Weather and Sea Conditions prior to choosing a shore dive on any given day.
