Those pictures were so wonderful. Those flamingo tongues look like shells, don’t they? Or are they shells? Very cool. Sorry you’re home but sure looks like you had a wonderful trip.
Shelly ?
Sheely:
The Flamingo Tongue has a shell, but it is on the inside.
What you see is the mantle of the critter. It wraps around the shell. It comes out for the critter to move about and feed.
And yes, the shell is very pretty.
Enjoyed your trip report, DS. Great pics! Unfortunately we’re gonna have to get another camera……. the old one died. ? Maybe we’ll get over to GC soon and I can check with Cathy. We got our lionfish certification and will pick up our spear Monday. There are a number of lionfish hunters on the Brac now. Hopefully we can make a dent in their numbers. I’ve already gotten a bunch of lionfish recipes to try.
jdcpa,
Thanks again for help with the U/W critters. I like it when someone can shed some light on what I see down there. We travel with our handy Paul Humann fish and creature ID books but can only glean so much from them.
Hey Brakker,
Good to hear you have a lionfish certificate. Be careful, though. I hear they can put a world of hurt on you. They’re supposed to be tasty, too, so bon appetit!
Definitely check with Cathy Church about the camera. We were very pleased with the whole affair, except for having to do it in the first place!

DS and the lovely Mrs. DS… we miss you guys already! As always, it was a blast diving with you both! Can’t wait until your next visit … and your Spanglish is fluent!! ?

We’re missing you all and the warm Cayman sunshine already. Forecast for tonight and tomorrow is cold, wind and a couple inches of snow.
We had a blast as always. Little Cayman was a great experience, but the last dive day we had 20 divers on the boat. Then we got to Grand Cayman and diving with you. It was great having so few divers on each dive! The critters seem much more relaxed without a herd of divers swarming all over their reef.
Say “hola” to Jorge for us!

DS:
Wonderful photos and commentary! I’m glad you both had a great time. And you got to come back to snow…what a way to add insult to injury!

How hard is it to get your lionfish certification? We see a good number of them on the various walls around Grand Cayman and wouldn’t mind ridding the environment of a few invaders.
Thanks.

I’m with Bill! Is there any way for relatively short-term visitors to get certification? I’d do my part to help the reef and would love to have a place where we could donate the lionfish for food for the hungry. Sounds like a benefit all around.

In answer to the previous posts…….
The Department of Environment has hosted two seminars here on the Brac that I am aware of. They give information on lionfish and instructions in capturing and safe handling etc. Anyone can attend…. you do not have to be Caymanian. Getting a “licence” is a little more involved. An application must be filled out and a police background check obtained. Only an assumption, but I believe your address on the application must be local. I would like to see divers who are interested in preservation of our reefs taking part in lionfish control and I suggest anyone interested go to the DoE website to get information first hand. DO IT! It may be the start of something big.

Bill,
I agree there is something terribly wrong with that picture! The only white stuff I want to see is warm coral-based GC sand on my barefeet!
Thanks for sharing the warm GC diving pics. Looks like everyone had a great time. :thumb:
Hey DS,
I finally got a chance to sit and enjoy your report. Sorry to hear about your flight and camera mishaps but all-in-all I bet you had a wonderful trip with memories that will last a lifetime. Your photos made me wish I was there now and you are right that the closeup details of the reef are the most beautiful. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.
Hi flaxx,
Glad you enjoyed the trip report! We had a great time and I enjoy sharing it with fellow CAGers!
