We just got back today and were a bit bummed that we didn’t get out to Stingray city. From all the rain the water was murky last week (snorkeling was really bad) and then we heard that 2 days ago Stingray city was brownish/black from the mangrove trees. We decided not to taint our great experience in the past. Some friends who went didn’t even get in the water and said many passengers were upset and disenchanted. Does anyone know about the trees and this problem??? We had a great time in any case, although the surf on SMB was way too rough for kids!!!! We will go back!

    Hi Salsa – http://www.caymanactivityguide.com/forums/images/smiles/welcome.gif” alt=”” title=”” class=”bbcode-image” />

We received over two feet of rain last week, which is almost half of our annual average rainfall. I can assure you that what you experienced was an extremely isolated incident. The waters of the Cayman Islands are among the clearest in the entire Caribbean, owing primarily to the filtering effect of the Mangrove trees and the extreme depths of the surrounding trench.

    Hi Salsa!

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your post. ?

I’m so sorry you experienced the after affects of all that rain fall. I’ve experienced the waves the last two times I visited, as well. It stinks for snorkeling but so enjoyable to watch. ?

I’m sure the personal downtime, was relaxing and pleasurable. Vacations are so necessary! Why do vacation hours always seem shorter then work hours?

Thanks for the welcome. That was our third trip and we love the Caymans…..like I said I just had never heard of this brown water problem before at Stingray city. We were told it might take up to 3 weeks to clear up….hopefully not that long! Thankfully we have had the incredible experience with the rays in the past! We did have a great trip despite the rain…..it’s so beautiful there. We also enjoyed the new turtle farm and the dinner buffet at Stinger’s with the fire eater…..my kids thought that was so cool!!!! Does anyone know where we can get the band “Heat” cd???? They were awesome and we had to leave while the band was still playing to go pack.

Salsa – I’ve been trying to find a Heat CD for one of our other members for almost 2 years now and I have been unable to locate one. I’ll keep looking.

Salsa – what you experienced is something that only happens during absolutely heavy rains and it happens to be tannin coming from the mangroves which causes the water to have a red cast to it. It is not harmful but certainly not what our normally crystal clear waters produce. Odd that it is caused by the very same system that does serve to help filter our waters. It is already almost completely cleared up.

I hope you give our islands another try when we aren’t having a influx of liquid sunshine!

    Salsa,

I really like ‘Heat’, too! We have them on our video disc from Stingray City, but it’s only a few songs and I want more, MORE, MORE! ?

    Joe,

If that’s me you are talking about, THANK YOU! Perhaps they could just do a special session and make a disc just for CAG members! ?

    All,

We were in Orlando last week to catch Alberto, but it really wasn’t bad. Monday was pretty much a wash-out, but we went shopping at a really nice, new mall. The other days were just typical Florida rainy season. But who cares, I wasn’t in Ohio!! It may not have been Cayman, but it’s as close as I’m gonna’ get for this year! ?

tgking95 – Yep, that’s you. ? I’ve been checking Funky Tangs and asking around when I see them play but they have not been producing CDs lately. I have not seen the original Heat play together in a while. They appear at a few different venues but usually not all three of them. I think one of the girls left the island and was replaced. I’ll get more details from my friend at Stingers (where they perform ) when I see her on Sunday. ?

Joe – I think they are performing tonight at Stingers at least I think that’s what the sign said when we drove by earlier today.

Thanks Cindy – I’ll try to stop by on my way to go check out the boat. I know it won’t be all three original singers and it might just be one or two of them, with a backup band.

As usual, I’m running late. I need to go and shoot a video of the new Taffy Factory. :split:

cindylou….we will for sure be back!!!! We know those waters are one of the prettiest in the world…just a bummer it had to be murky while we were there, but those things happen. My hubby is about to call Stingers….we want Heat’s CD!!! We have a few songs from one of snorkeling trip DVD’s, but want the whole thing!

    Hi folks,

I’m new here. My family and I are planning to leave for Cayman tomorrow morning and will be there for the week. Everything I’m seeing shows showers every day. Is this an all day long thing or pop-up showers that move out quickly. I”m very anxious. I don’t want to spend the week watching it rain. A current weather report would be great.

    Thanks!!!

Don’t worry! While Cayman did recently have quite a bit of rain, I think it has pretty much cleared up. You will, most likely, experience some showers and maybe even some heavy showers, but then 10 minutes later, you will probably be experiencing the beautiful sunshine again. :sun: The clouds and rain usually move very quickly over the island as there are no mountains to trap and hold them.

You’ll love it!!! Have a great time.
