shelly: Your photos are amazing!
Thank you for submitting such a wonderful and colorful holiday trip report. :clapping:
Mike
We’ve still got a week left here, so hopefully it will stop snowing by then!
Shelly ?
Shelly.. Thanks for sharing your memories and photos. We received around 4″ of snow today and only in the teens. It helps to see photos of beautiful Grand Cayman.
Nice shots Shelly.

Hey spiritman
haven’t seen you post in awhile. Looks like that night be a new picture of the family-but it needs to be a little bigger for me to see all the details.
I think you’ve been having a bit of a chill in florida?
Shelly ?
Have not gone anywhere…just lurking like a sting ray waiting for a olive to far off the bar…they have got to be kidding.
I still pop in regularly just been a while since I have been to The island so my info would be dated. Still planning on getting back.
Yes that is a Christmas photo of my clan…will try and have my son crop it and make it bigger.
Have lived in S. FL 20 years and this is the longest and coldest streak I have seen…they are predicting flurries Saturday night…OK all you Northerners I know it ain’t no big deal to you but good God I am cold.
Enjoy your time left Shelly.

Spiritman,
I just got home from work and saw 0 degrees F on my van thermometer. I feel no sympathy for you :crying:. Good to see you on the board, though ?
Mike,
I suggested to her that she extend her vacation a bit so it’d overlap ours and we could meet. She so far she hasn’t taken me up on that ❗ . I’d even buy her a mudslide on my extravagnt CAG moderator expense account :jump: .
Shelly,
We might have to try and find time for one of the iguana tours if I’m up for it. I blew out my ankle a few weeks ago (volleyball is a brutal sport, but I won the point at the net before landing on the other blokes foot!) so it’ll depend on how much walking I feel up to. Sucks getting older, things don’t heal as fast as they used to. But hopefully it will withstand diving and a land tour.
Five weeks from now we’ll be there, and I can’t bloody well wait!

We have friends who WERE very aggressive volleyball players—I think they have given up the sport now—something or other was always happening to them-but they are a bit older than you. I think you’ve still got a few good years left !
It’s cloudy again today so maybe I’ll get to the rest of my pictures-we’ll see

Here are the next set of pictures from our visit to Pedro St.James and the Iguana Tour
As I said before the Blue Iguana tour was amazing. The tour goes in the morning at 11am—I think every day except Sunday. It was $16CI. There is an additional charge to tour the rest of the Botanic Garden. You should probably do that too if you haven’t been there before. Lots of colorful flowers, plus some trails that you will cover in the Iguana tour. They have a little gift shop too. Unfortunately my camera battery ran out so I only have 2 photos—one of the Iguana Warden, John, who took us on the tour and one of a small iguana inside a tube. The area with the small iguanas is called the headstart area. From there we went to an area with full size iguanas, which John picked up to show us some of the features on the iguana. These iguanas have strong jaws and you would not want to get too near them. John had gotten a broken foot from a bite from one of the adult blues.

The Pedro St. James Tour was very interesting if you like history…a little slow but I found it enjoyable. There is a 3D presentation prior to the tour of the house. The house was the birthplace of democracy in the Cayman islands. The house had a lot of damage from Hurricane Ivan but is all fixed up again.
Before the tour there was a little area with pictures of some of the history of the island. One of the things I found interesting were the pictures of some of the stamps. The Cayman islands have the most beautiful stamps. In the old days I remember going to the post office in Georgetown to get some of their colorful stamps

This is a replica of the jail room inside the house

Enjoying a rock in this huge rocking chair inside the house

Out in the yard there is an outdoor cookhouse called a caboose. The second shot is of the interior of the cookhouse.

This is a grinding wheel

Thatch rope was an important product that used to be made here.

This is a pimento tree in the backyard-when you break a leaf it smells like allspice.

This was just a nice way to spend a day when the weather was not the best.
One night we went to dinner at Portofino. We had been there years ago, but had never gone back. We decided that we really enjoyed it this year and went several times. It’s Italian plus some cayman food. They have excellent conch fritters, that actually have lots of chopped conch in the center of them—instead of just bits of conch mixed with the batter. I also had cayman style grouper that was excellent. Their bread pudding is also very good. So anyhow, we were sitting on the porch and all of a sudden I saw this glow at the horizon and I just couldn’t imagine what it was—it was a moon rise that looked just amazing. I had never seen one before. It looks just like the sun rising only it’s night time. This picture really doesn’t do justice to this amazing sight

A pelican swimming in the water near rum point. As soon as I load the rest of my pictures, I probably have a good shot of 5 pelicans sitting on a pier.

And here’s the common lizard that you seen tons of around the island

That’s it for today—the next batch of pictures will include kiteboarding and windsurfing off of what is commonly called starfish point on a very windy day.
Scrolling quickly through the pictures, I thought the dummy in the jail cell was Michael Jackson… I almost started moon-walking…

very funny DS—I can see the likeness too!

I plan on playing volleyball well into my 90s. I still have the energy I had when I was in my 20s and 30s but darn it all, things get hurt easier and don’t heal as fast as they used to…
Enjoy the last few days of your vacation.

Those are wonderful photos! I wish we ca finalize our plans for our trip!
This is the last bunch of pictures. We sadly only have 1 day left on the island and I doubt that I will be taking any more shots.
There are some pretty elaborate Christmas decorations on the island. This is in front of a house near where we stayed—and also a picture of the rotating tree inside the house

One of the days, it was very windy and a bunch of guys were at Starfish point kiteboarding and windsurfing. I loved watching the kiteboarder fly up in the air. These guys follow the winds to wherever they are happening on the island.

So your beach isn’t sandy enough for you? Well just bring in a truck load of it. Actually there were 8 truckloads being put in front of Kaibo Yacht Club
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m299/shelly41/sanddump3.jpg%5B/img%5D
I have seen this thing in the water at the Public Beach on Water Cay Road and always thought it was some old trap or something, but I was told that at Easter they have a big bonfire in the water at this spot—I have no clue why this wood doesn’t burn—it’s looked the same for the last 4 years.

I remember when the only way you could find the Blow Holes was by seeing the water shooting up in the air. Now it looks like there is a concession stand there.

Guess what’s coming to the island –I saw 3 of them in the process of being built-

If you’ve missed seeing your favorite Cayman rooster and sand crab, hope you’ll enjoy these.

This is the first fireboat that I’ve seen on the island—I’m sure they’ve been here, but I’ve never seen one before.

Caymanians do eat goat—and you do see it on the menu at some of the local type places

A bunch of pelicans not far from Starfish Point
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m299/shelly41/pelicansonpier.jpg%5B/img%5D
And a red starfish near the same area

I really got a laugh out of this sign at the Water Cay Rd. Public Park—They’re trying to save money here in Cayman too—too bad they want you to conserve on your use of the restrooms. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m299/shelly41/signatpublicbeach.jpg%5B/img%5D
This truck was also at the Park—interesting department—recreation parks and cemeteries

Had a great month and I’ll be counting down the days until our return
