Gustav's current track predicts its closest approach to the Cayman Islands between Thursday evening and Friday morning as a category 3 hurricane.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for eastern Jamaica and southern Cuba. A storm warning or hurricane watch will likely be issued for the Cayman Islands later today or tomorrow.

Visitors planning to arrive in the Cayman Islands between Thursday the 28th and Saturday the 30th are advised to monitor this system. At present, there is a less than 30% chance of hurricane force winds effecting any part of the Cayman Islands.

I will post the latest developments as they become available.

Thank you for the update Joe. I've been tracking the storm since yesterday! Hope you don't have to pull the car into the house again! Smile

Thanks Shelly - It does not look like this system poses much of a threat.

Kim - "car in house" That was so not fun! Very Happy

I also have been watching very carefully as we here in Southeast Florida are still drying out from Fay. Still too early to tell for sure how or if Gustav will be a problem. Hope everyone stays prepared and safe. (am taking my generator to get fixed today...;-))

I'll be praying that it doesn't do any damage to any of the islands. We were in S. Padre when the hurricane hit after the 4Th of July. What a mess there is now.

Joe.......glad Gustav doesn't pose much of a threat....but "car in the house" WAS unique....most of us keep ours in the driveway, garage, parking lot or street, but know you're more creative than that.........where will we be seeing the boat?

The Cayman Islands have just been put under a hurricane watch......it's really cool that the graphics that Joe posted automatically update themselves, so be sure to keep checking back to his first post in the thread. If you look at the first one, you'll see that the Cayman Islands are now outlined in pink, meaning they're under a watch.

Yikes!

I remember that amazing car picture too---sure hope you don't have to go through anything like that ever again. But what foresight, to have doors wide enough for a car to pass through.

This is such a unique situation! Gustav is now officially back to a tropical storm, yet the Cayman Islands remain under a Hurricane Watch!

Evidently, they expect it to become a category 2 Hurricane tomorrow (Thursday) as it passes north of Jamaica, and then become a category 3 Hurricane by Friday morning, as it passes just north of the Sister Islands.

If you are planning to arrive in the Cayman Islands in the next few days, you need to stay tuned for information on airport closures, etc.

Stay safe, everyone!

Char

It appears right now that Little Cayman and Cayman Brac will be closer to the eye wall and the Hurricane force winds. Let's hope it stays as far North as possible thus missing the smaller islands.

You can always come to New York, where we drive on the parkway and park in the driveway... Jump

Hopefully Gustav will remain the "little guy" that the Weather Channel has been calling it and not effect the Caymns too severely.

That car in the house pick was a good one : )

Hope you all escape the worst of Gustav - I saw that Dr. Masters at wunderground is mentioning Cat 4 by the time it gets to Caymans! Here's a quote:

By Friday, as Gustav approaches the Cayman Islands, the storm will be underneath an upper level anticyclone, and over the highest heat content waters of the Atlantic. The HWRF and GFDL models respond by intensifying Gustav to a Category 3 hurricane as it passes through the Caymans. I think it is plausible that Gustav could intensify further, to Category 4 strength, before hitting the Caymans. If you have plans to be on the northern Cayman Islands--Cayman Brac or Little Cayman Island--on Friday, be prepared to be stuck there for several days, as Gustav may heavily damage these islands. Grand Cayman Island is also at risk--the GFDL model predicts Gustav will pass very close to Grand Cayman on Friday afternoon.
