PostPosted: Wed May 17, 2006 2:04 pm    Post subject: Visiting in August

I'm making my first Cayman trip in August 2006 (16th - 23rd). I know that is the middle of hurricane season, but it's the only time I could arrange things.

So, to get to my question: What are the chances of a hurricane? What are the averages for rain, etc...? I'd like to know what to expect. I've read a lot of posts, but none really seem to directly answer my questions. There's a lot of talk about "never a bad time to visit", "rains alot for a short period then ends", etc... Just curious about what to expect.

Thanks in advance for what I'm sure will be very helpful replies.

jtownesquire - there is no way to predict when we are going to have a hurricane until the season begins to shape up. The further into hurricane season you go the greater a chance for a hurricane to hit for us. Many areas get hit early on other areas get hit later on. For Cayman, traditionally it is the later months of hurricane season that we have the greatest likelihood of having a hurricane. The season begins June first and usually ends November 1st but we were having tropical storm activity into December this past year.

The past several years have been of course much more active and there is the chance of tropical storm activity from now until the end of the year. So worse case scenario is you get hit with a Cat 5 hurricane during your stay (at which point we encourage our visitors to evacuate Very Happy ) best case scenario you have hot still days with a bit of breeze and plenty of sunshine.

Another example, we had a bit of a front come through yesterday afternoon so by around 4 p.m. the island over all was experiencing rain and that continued through to the early morning hours. The clouds are building up again and if there hasn't been showers then there probably will be, at least scattered in the next couple of hours.

If a tropical depression or front comes through then expect some wild and woolly days for a couple of days. But depending upon what direction the storm is coming in the seas will be either rough or calm or a combination.

As to inches of rain our average annual rain fall is about 46 inches with the bulk of that coming between now and November (obviously more if hurricanes are happening).

If you are really concerned you might want to take out trip insurance that would cover in case you have to cut your trip short.

So to make a long story short you could very well experience a hurricane here during August Very Happy

Cindy Lou:

I knew I could count on you to give me a nice concise answer. I already have trip insurance, but my understanding is that only covers up to the date of departure....if you cut the vacation short because of weather, etc... they consider that "your choice" and it is not covered. So, unless the hurricane hits before I leave and destroys the island....Heaven forbid!!!....the insurance really isn't worth much. I only get it because I ride a motorcycle around all summer and don't want to wreck it and have the loss of my bike AND my vacation!

So, thanks for the information. I'll just keep hoping for clear skies and sunny weather for my trip. If you do the same on my behalf, I'd be more than willing to buy you and teh hubby a drink (or two...or three) or dinner as a thank-you. (I'm not above bribery if it will add any chance of a great vacation!)

jtownesquire - I am more than happy to project for lovely sunny weather for you for your trip to Cayman, I even promise to not plan any picnics or trips out on the water (this is because every time I threaten to go to SRC or out on the water the weather turns bad Rolling Eyes ) and I don't even need bribing although I must admit I see no point in turning down a perfectly good bribe Very Happy

By the way, love the avatar, what is the Rottie's name???? Looks like the perfect lap dog!

I have been down to Cayman the last 5-6 Augusts...about the same time as you are going...in fact I will be down there Aug. 13-19 this year and I have always had perfectly HOT, SUNNY weather with a few, quick rain storms that pass over the island and last about 5 minutes or so. Some nights there is lightening off in the horizon, but I have never had poor weather in August...or in April, or in July.....and only in one December...and that isn't too bad for the amount of trips. Go and enjoy!

The Rottie's name is Harley. He would be a great lap dog if he didn't weigh 138 lbs. Yes, big, muscular, and mean looking...but the biggest baby in the world! He'd more likely lick you to death than bite.

You do what you need to keep the weather nice for my trip. Otherwise, I'll tell my fiancee that it was all your fault! Just kidding....I've been trained well enough to know that it's my fault!

When we get closer to arrival date and maybe have some definite plans for something on a particular day, I'll let you know and you can stop by and I'll pay up on the bribe.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep hoping the weather is nice, for myself and for you. Nice to know that historically you've had good weather in August. Maybe you're good luck....care to stay until the end of my trip to keep it nice and sunny? Very Happy

Hey all,

Being that I leave in a week and a half, and so far, no named hurricanes, I'm watching this weather map that is on the forums, like a hawk! Today is looks REALLY scary, not sure if that is a 'tropical depression' in all the red/purple. But whatever it is, it's been stalled on the screen for a while now! It would be JUST my luck to be the unfortunate one to have to cancel a trip b/c of a hurricane...and trust me, I'm saying my prayers it doesn't happen. Not even so much b/c of MY trip (I can always reschedule), but b/c I really don't want to see another Katrina situation.

...Ok, thanks - just letting out a little bit of nerves!

Whatever it is, the National Hurricane Center isn't too worried about it. Of course, that just means that they don't think it will turn into a tropical storm or a hurricane any time soon.

The ******* always ends up in my bookmarks this time of year. After all, it is one of those "my tax dollars at work" kinds of things.

Have a great time.

There is a system developing just south of the Cayman Islands, which I suspect will eventually turn in to something after it makes its way past the islands to the north. The next few days will probably be mostly cloudy with extended periods of potentially heavy rain. After that, unless something new develops we should be back to mostly sunny skies with the occasional brief and isolated thunder shower.

Good news for divers during the next day or two, it doesn't rain underwater Very Happy

... that's what's bothersome to me, is the turning into something and heading North!!! That sends it right towards me!!!

We'll be in Columbus this weekend and the last thing I need to worry about is a storm heading towards the house!!

... There is also a potential storm spinning off the coast of Africa right now, hopefully it dies out like the rest.... we've been lucky so far this year, but that luck is bound to run out!!!

Jack - I think the system that's passing us now is moving too fast and developing too slow to pose any real threat to Florida, at least that's what I am hoping. The one off Africa does bear watching. Wink
