NEW - Bioluminescence Tours!
One of the most amazing experiences in your life!

Bioluminescence is the phenomenon where light or glow is created by a living creature's interaction of internal chemical reactions. Approximately 80% of all marine life creates bioluminescence to varying extents. This is done to accomplish different survival advantages and strategies, including: mating, predator avoidance and feeding. When a particular species of plankton concentrates in very high numbers in rare areas around the world, the results are astounding.

One of nature's most enthralling light shows exists in the Cayman Islands at several locations in Grand Cayman's Northside area.

The tours take place on the darkest nights of the month when the moon has not risen or is new, to avoid light pollution and provide the most spectacular natural marine show in the world!

This is the first I heard about a Kayak eco-tour on Grand Cayman. We will be sure to give it a try next visit. There are a lot of interesting things to see in the mangrove areas and if it is well-guided it could prove to be quite informative as well. Not to mention, I could use the exercise. Very Happy

Cigars, you are certainly very colorful with your posts Razz

You are going to love it. And in fact, it is very informational, not just for the kids but for people of all ages.

The Mangrove trees play a vital role in the island's intricate eco-system: filtering water; providing a hiding spot for juvenile fish, and many other features.

Bring a camera and a notebook! Razz

We just tried this for the first time last week.

We explored several coastal environments by kayak. An air-conditioned bus took us about 5 miles to the Kayak staging area where we met Ray, our wonderful and very knowledgable guide. We started in a shallow, protected area where he gave us a safety briefing and a little info about the Kayaks. Before long we all set out on your expedition, exploring secluded shorelines, inlets, bird-nesting areas, sea grass, and mangrove communities.

Along the way our guide pointed out scenes of interest and described the importance and interdependence of these fragile ecosystems with the surrounding coral reefs. We also had the opportunity to get in the water for a refreshing swim and snorkel around a healthy coral head. Snorkel equipment was provided at no extra charge.

We were on the water for about 2 hours total, but did not have to paddle the whole time. Stops were made as the guide points out areas of interest, and for the snorkel and swim stops. The Kayaks are two-person models, and are very maneuverable and stable. They provided safety vests to people that wanted them, but we could stand up in a lot of the places so we kept ours off. You need to bring sunscreen and sunglasses for sure, and a cap would be a plus as well. After returning to shore, the home journey took us through south sound, a very upscale residential community. Restrooms were available at the start and end of tour and we had a chance to pick up some really neat t-shirts at the Atlantis gift store after the tour.

I would highly recommend this activity to everyone. It was one of the highlights of our vacation.

I've done these types of tours in the Florida Keys. If the guide is good, the tour can be both educational and enjoyable. I will look forward to giving it a try next time I am there.

We want to give this a try. Do you think it would be alright to bring a small ice chest with some beers in it?

We took the kayak tour last summer. It was wonderful! Very informative and fun. Not to say it was hard, but we did paddle a lot and we were pretty pooped afterward. At least we burned off a few of those rum and dinner calories!!!

I would highly recommend it. If I can ever get my pictures from last year posted, I'll put some up from that trip.

Jenifer

Does anyone have a rough idea of what the price would be for the kayak ecotour (for two of us)? It sounds like such a great, interesting excursion for our week down there!

Thanks!! Cheers

I can't remember the price on the tour since it's been a year since that one. It was through Atlantis. You might be able to check their website for the price and don't forget your AG discount!!!

It was a WONDERFUL tour! We learned alot. On our trip this year, we both noticed lots of things that we learned about last year....especially the mangroves and the effect Ivan had on their growth.

I highly recommend it!

Jen

P.S. I finally remembered where I posted photos from 2004 trip. Click HERE http://www.caymanactivityguide.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=473&highlight=

The first two pictures are from the kayaking trip.

Thanks Joe & Jen!

I will try to find the prices on the website... and I'll check those pics as soon as I get a chance, Jen! I'm sure they're beautiful!

If I don't find anything out on prices, Joe, I'll keep an eye out for your new info when you get back to the island...

Very Happy ~mandi
