Hello:

We will be vacationing in the Cayman's from April 13-21, 2009, and are in the process of renting a car for that trip. Can you tell me how much luggage you could fit in the back of the car that you rented? Could you fit 2 large suitcases?

Angie

Hi Angie,

Welcome to the forum! wave It depends on what size car you will rent. (you can rent any size you want) If you rent a small car and there's 2 of you, you should be fine. Guess it also depends on the size of your luggage, but I know we did it and it worked for us. I had a luggage for just my shoes! Laughing Laughing

Hi Tracy:

Thanks for your reply.

We are looking at renting a Daihatsu Charade, which is a small car, through Budget. We are bringing our two girls (ages 5 and 8) with us, so we would need seating for 4...just didn't know if we could get away with getting the small car and still be able fit the two large suitcases in the back (what I would call the trunk area) of the car (by large, I mean the largest suitcase in a three suitcase set). We don't need a large car for moving around the island, just need to make sure that we have enough room to get the luggage from the airport to the North side and then back to the airport.

Welcome to the forum aholzum Smile ,

Not sure which car rental agency you are going through, but I know that Andy's car rental (one of the ones we recommend here) has all that information on their website. They show each car and then exactly how many people and pieces of luggage you can expect it to carry.

What size are you thinking of renting (compact, mid-size....)? There are all sizes of cars available for rent in the Cayman Islands. It would be a shame, though, to rent a larger car than you need just to fit in your suitcases for the first and last day. You could always take a cab from the airport to your hotel or condo, then pick up the car later. Again, if you rent through Andy's, they have a 7 Mile Beach office, in addition to the one at the airport, which is really handy. They will even shuttle you back to the airport with your luggage on your last day,

Just some options.

Char

Angie,

I sure wouldn't get the smallest car, with four of you the trunk space might be limited. I always come back with more than I got there with. It 's going to hard this go around. We're bringing our 3 kids with us this time and with just me and my daughter we could carry 5 suitcases alone. Wink BouncingLaugh With the new charges for luggage, I'll have to be more practical. Rolling Eyes Hope you guys have a blast!

Hi Cochise2006,

Great pics. It proves you need not go diving to great depths (or even diving at all) to see cool stuff. The squid and shark pics were great.

Actually, as I sit here watching the cold frost melt away on the back field, all of the pics of warm water and sand are great!

We've never stayed at the Sea Lodges, although my dad stayed there several times and spoke about folks snorkeling from there to Rum Point to enjoy a relaxing afternoon and aneasy walk back. Of course, that was years ago and Rum Point has gotten much more congested and commercial; it isn't just a cool 'bar on the beach' anymore.

We mostly dive now, snorkel rarely, but some of our folks who will join us onour next trip do snorkel. We appreciate your details of where to find stuff and will keep the info for their reference.

Thanks for the detailed info and pics.

DS

Hi aholzum

We rent that size car all the time, but I think that there is really only room for 1 large suitcase in the back. You might be able to put 1 suitcase in between the seats if your child could put feet on top of it and you could pull your front seat forward. They are pretty small cars, but fine for running around the island.

There was a time when we used to rent a car and then as Char suggested one of us would go in a cab with the luggage.

Have fun on your trip
Shelly :-)

Shelly:

Thanks for the info. Was also thinking we could possible stand a suitcase up on the backseat between the two girls...

We are from Wisconsin, so we are really looking forward to the sunshine and warm weather...although, we have been having a heatwave lately with 40 degree weather. Smile

Thanks again.

Angie

Arrgghhhh! New boat, huh. Our boat is still in storage. It's hard to go boating with ice still on the lake. We only get about two weeks on it each year. I hope gas is less that the almost $5/gal we paid last summer.

Enjoy some floating time for us...

ds,

Sorry about the boat...ours is in gear and ready to go! Laughing
Don't know how we would make it if we only had 2 wks for water sports. We are such an outside family. It can get super hot here in July/Aug. like 105 or more. That's too too hot, but we can always find shade. rockbed

Actually we did exactly that when we picked up a couple at the airport this year. We put one suitcase in the back and the other suitcase in between them on the seat. But it was not a huge size suitcase--more like a good sized rollaboard.

We're hoping for cheap gas this year. The big block Mercruiser sounded like a great idea when gas was $1.50/gal at the marina BouncingLaugh .

We'd use the boat more, but it stays four and a half hours north of where we live. We gotta either move closer to the boat, or bring the boat closer to us!

ds,

I think I'd move closer to the boat. It's worth it if your closer to warmer weather. You know here in Tx to get anywhere it takes a day! Wink
Worth it sometimes! BouncingLaugh BouncingLaugh
