We are coming back to Grand Cayman in June. We have never gone snorkeling at night and don't know if it would be worth the effort. We don't know if there is enough to see or what there is to see at night that isn't around in the daylight. We are staying near the Cracked Conch and would be looking for someplace relatively close. Cemetery Beach perhaps?

Any information or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin & Danielle

Welcome kevin7500:

The dive/snorkel area at the Cracked Conch is the best shore dive in all of Grand Cayman, subject to conducive weather and sea conditions. Since you are staying near there I would definitely add that to your must-do list

You may find our Night Diving page helpful. Most guided night dives vary from 20-60 feet so you don't need to go very deep to see a wide variety of fascinating fish, corals and other creatures not often observed during daylight hours.

A twilight snorkel—anywhere from an hour to fifteen minutes prior to sunset would unveil a whole new realm of activity and behaviors not often perceived during the day.

Another option would be to contact any of our Recommended Dive Operators, mention that you are an Activity Guide member and ask them if you could tag along with them on one of their night dives. I'm sure they would be happy to offer a special low rate for you. Some of the most popular night dive sites such as the Balboa shipwreck are only 20-40ft. deep so there is much to be seen, even near the surface.

As always, if you decide to venture out on your own, be sure to stay close to each other and bring some type of flotation device to alert others to your position.

Have a wonderful vacation and please tell us all about it when you return.

We have gone out at night, and I think it's great fun. Of course, we're leaving the kids with our parents at that point. What wouldn't be fun?

I would suggest that you each have your own light. We went out the first night with only one, and it was a little more difficult. If you each have a light, you can find each other much easier. It is easier to get disoriented at night. We generally stayed within reach of each other the whole time.

And I would also suggest going somewhere that you have been in daylight hours if you are going out on your own.

Thanks for the advice, Joe. I guess the first place we will try is out the door of the condo!

Haltom; I don't think I will have any difficulty keeping Danielle close to me...at night...in the ocean.
