Hi!

It's my turn to ask a question!!

I know that I've read some posts recently telling about a neat little snorkeling route to take from somewhere (?), ending up at the Rum Point Beach. Was the idea to leave from the Kaibo area and go along the shore up to Rum Point, or was it from the Cayman Kai Public Beach?

I've searched through some trip reports and other threads where I thought I read about this, but can't find it.

Shelly, it seems to me that it might have been you who posted about this, or maybe Northside Sue. Confused

Thanks!

Char

Hi Char,

The late Jack Drew, one of my dad's closest friends and a long-time Cayman fanatic (and the one who introduced the Cayman Islands to our family Very Happy Go Jack!!) used to stay in the Sea Lodges at the Cayman Kai Resort and would snorkel from there to Rum Point all the time. Dad said it was a really cool swim, and not too taxing if you took it slow and easy.

Wherever you start, it sounds like a great, relaxing excusrion.

18 days!

DS

ds is correct. We usually park by the Sea Lodges (we have friends there) and swim down to Rum Point, have a beverage and walk the beach back. But you could also park at the public beach, which is a few houses west of the Sea Lodges, and go from there.

This way you are swimming with the current, not against it.

Hope you all have a great vacation!

Thanks to both of you, DS and Sue!

I've snorkeled at that public beach a few times, years ago, but have never done this!

I think we're going to be doing a little more snorkeling than usual this year, because my niece and her husband (who aren't divers) will be with us for our second week, and we'll want to show them around and take them to some neat places. Snorkel

Thanks again!

Char

Char

We went over there a few days this year and the current was pretty strong....but it does go towards Rum Point. The reef is not too far out and our son went out there and said it was beautiful. There is also a freef closer in that some people told us they like to float by. It's just to the left of the Cayman Kai public beach....you can see it from the beach--.these people told us that they don't usually go to Rum Point but get out of the water at a house with a gazebo. Because of the current I walked down to the right to get into the water and then just got out at the public beach----but I missed the good stuff.

Maybe next year I'll get the courage to go all the way to Rum Point

I'll be looking forward to hearing about your snorkel expeditions.

You'll get to have lunch at Kaibo if you're over in that area.

Shelly :-)

We have just been up this way a few times. Where is Cayman Kai public beach? I am familiar with Kaibo, and know have been to the starfish beach. I suppose I wasn't really looking out for the public beach when we were there.

The public beach is a few blocks before you get to the left turn to head toward Kaibo. (Before you get to Rum Point) You have to be on the lookout for it. There is a sign, but it's easy to pass by it. There is a garbage can and there are light greenish cement walls on the sides of the drive.

I don't think the public beach would be a good spot to snorkel with the little kids though----unless you somehow got a very very calm day.

Shelly :-)

Thanks, Shelly! For this one I was thinking that our parents could drop us (my husband and I) off there, and they could take the kids and wait for us at Rum Point.

Northsidesue, Any idea how long the snorkel from the public beach would take?

Thanks!!

It's about a 15-20 minute walk and slightly longer to snorkel since there are things to stop and contemplate. Laughing

Thank you, Sue. It will probably take me longer. I like to contemplate and take pictures!!

Haltom,

Here is a picture of the Cayman Kai Public Beach. This will give you an idea of what to look for.

I drop off my son and husband there and head out to Rum Point to relax while i wait for them. They love doing this snorkel trip.

Have fun

Heidi martini
