Does anyone know the hotspots to snorkel where one can find starfish and/or conch? I've only snorkeled once before (Hawaii) and saw neither. I heard the Cayman Kai area is good for starfish. Any other places? Thanks!

Be aware many areas are marine parks were nothing can be removed, and other areas have restrictions relating to open seasons, and what wildlife can be taken and by whom.

Is it safe to pick up a starfish?? They can't hurt you, right?

OMG, I think I'd have a heart attack right there in the water if I saw a seahorse! One of my favorite sea creatures, and I've only seen them in tanks.

Starfish won't hurt you if you pick them up. Just please put them right back in the water, "right" side down. Smile

Sea horses are some of the most beautiful little creatures I've ever seen. The first one I saw was in Little Cayman about 10 years ago on Bloody Bay Wall. There used to be one that could be spotted fairly regularly near the Rum Point dock, although I haven't heard of anyone seeing that one since the storm. Keep your eyes wide open in the shallow areas and around docks and pilings, sooner or later you will see one - that is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

I too would LOVE to see a seahorse!!!! Saw starfish at the dock at Kaibo and also at the Reef Resort just a few yards from shore. Sooo exciting! Saw a little octopus at Eden Rock too-hubby found it because it was being stalked by a fish that was swimming vertical to stalk it! Don't you just LOVE being in the water in Cayman!!!!!!!!

I think my favorite sight when snorkeling is the squid. We went to Bonaire a couple of years ago and I was thrilled to see so many. They are the cutest things in the water with their big eyes. I never went fishing with squid again after that. Saw and held lots of starfish in the Abacos. I'm talking about the big ones. They are beautiful and all over the waters there. Can't wait till we get to Cayman. 8)

We saw one seahorse in the grass around the pilings near the tip of Cayman Kai. It was in the shallows, and had we not been looking at an odd box fish would not have seen him at all.

We saw a bunch of squid at the wreck of the Calli one year. They were in groups of 2 and three. They are awesome to see.

For some reason, I HATE GARS! None of the other fish bother me, not even the baracudda [unless they are too close, and we did see a monster one at Eden Rock], but those gar - I don't know what it is. They creep me out!

I know it is silly and makes no sense...they are actually a very pretty blue color in the sea around Grand Cayman...but they give me the creeps

I guess they are called needlefish as well...we grew up calling them gar.

Wrasse don't bother me, and they are built somewhat simillar [no needle nose though]. I just don't like the things!!! My grown sons like to find them in the water and corral them my way to hear me yell in my snorkel tube.

Irrational fear...they are just not for me.

oh, yeah! Now I know what you're talking about... They seem to like to hang out near the shoreline in groups, and I can never see them unless I'm underwater with my mask on...wonder how they avoid bumping into people swimming close to shore. I guess they are kind of intimidating, now that I think about it!
