As I was swimming laps this morning, thinking about how much I'm looking forward to swimming toward a Cayman reef or two (or three), I remembered what a blessing it was to learn about the world's easiest, cheapest anti-fog mixture that I now use for my swimming goggles and my snorkeling mask.

Diving Diving Diving

I learned about this on a snorkel boat trip in Hawaii when I asked the reason for the bottle of el-cheapo brand of dish detergent next to the rental equipment. They told me that a 1:12 [doesn't have to be precise] solution of detergent to water in a spray bottle works better than the expensive pre-mixed stuff you can buy in a dive or snorkel shop. You spray a couple pumps of the solution on your mask/goggles, then dip it into water before putting it to your face. It works GREAT!!

And of course, you can also use shampoo or body wash since they are just good-smelling detergents as well! (I use a few drops of diluted shampoo sprayed on my bathroom mirror, then wiped with a paper towel, to make it fog-resistant. I usually don't keep dish detergent in the bathroom. Smile)

I've always just used cheap old spit, but I like this idea better, Suebee. I think I'll save the little spray bottle my eye glass cleaner is in and try this out. That is small enough to throw in the bag with the masks. Thanks for sharing that tip. I will use it next trip!

Sue,

You are so right about that. Laughing

I'm anxious to give it a try. Did the people on the boat dip the mask in a bucket of clean water or just in the sea after spraying with the solution?

(Maybe it doesn't matter.)

Yes, Celine... VT is the only landlocked New England state. We've had property there since the 70's. That place has had special meaning for years. It's a little cabin in the woods, but it's ours. I've been watching the same trees grow for 30 years. Not GC, but then GC's not VT... Wink

In a bucket of water. But it also works in the sea, and in chlorine pools! Very Happy

Again, spit and then swish around with a tiny bit of water and empty always seems to work.

Bye, Capri

I like Baby Shampoo, too--doesn't burn eyes if you don't get it rinsed out well. Also: rub toothpaste all around the inside of your mask at night (after cleaning it). Leave it in till you go snorkeling, rinse and apply the defogger in the sea. NO fog for hours.
