Confused Will we be able to use US dollars on Grand Cayman or will we need to convert our money? And would you recommend Traveler's Checks? Plenty of ATM Machines on the Island? We will be staying at the 7 Mile Beach Resort...I hope it is as nice as the others I have read about on this web-site. Even though, I am so happy to be coming, I would be content sleeping in my rental car! Thank you for all of your information. rockbed

You can use US dollars and you will get change back in Cayman dollars. Then you can use all the Cayman dollars to buy something fun at the end of your trip! We went to the ATM once, and that was only because we needed to pay cash for a couple of our excursions. We used our credit card to pay for all of our meals.

Have fun!

Hi Danette,

Yes, as Haltom has just said, no need to convert any money ahead of time. Everyone accepts US dollars, even the taxi drivers at the airport, so no worries there. There are also lots of ATM's around, so that helps too. In regards to Travelers Checks, most people don't bother getting them anymore, but we still do bring a few (my husband is such a "just in case..." kind of guy"....i.e., worrier). Anyway, if you cash your travelers checks at a bank or at some grocery stores (like Kirk's) you will get 82 cents to the dollar instead of the usual 80 cents. So, if that's worth it to you, then bring a few travelers checks....otherwise no real need to.

I'm with your husband. I keep bring those travelers checks along---just in case---but it's been quite a few years since I have used a single one of them. Probably since the groceries started taking credit cards.

Is it safe to assume the excursions would like to be paid in cash and pay for everything else credit card and travelers checks. Just don't want to be hit with a lot of fees. My bank says they will charge a 2.00 fee for ATMs will the ATMs there also add a fee for using it?

We use the atms and I think they charged us about $1.50 for the fee. They seem to be the same as the fees at home when you don't use your banks.
