Is it better to convert your money to Cayman or just spend US?

You get a better rate ($.82 vs. $.80) when you get money from an ATM.

What is the exchange rate for CL (Cayman) to US dollars. I understand there is a bus in Grand Cayman that costs 1.25 CL each way. Do they take US dollars or would I have to change money before getting on the bus.

The exchange rate is .8 to 1. You get 80 cents CI for a US dollar. The bus, and everyplace else take US money.

Atm's will give you .82 to the dollar. Everyone will exchange US to CI.

So we will be staying on the north side and my question is...wait for it...

Should I carry US dollars, Cayman dollars or both? Will I need US or Cayman dollars to buy gas, groceries a candy bar etc?

Thanks,

John

US & CI (Cayman dollar) is accepted island wide. When you pay in US, you will most likely get change in CI, exception is primarily in Georgetown or some resort areas on SMB. You shouldn't have a problem using US dollars.

Be sure you keep in mind the exchange rate between US & CI! Smile

Jmani,

I hope you love the northside as much as we do. It fits us...just right.

What you have been told about money on-island is right on, I can't add anything else to that...just wanted to wish you a good trip and to encourage you to leave a trip report and photo's upon your return.

Have a great time at Northern Lights! Your neighbors to the east are Gail and Reese Ruediger. To the west are BA and McCurley Greene. Say hello from Sue in Crystal Lake. And to Bo Miller as well.

Hi all. This is my first post in the forum. I've been reading for a couple weeks. What a cool place to learn about Cayman. I will be there in August and was concerned if they take the USDollar or if I need to exchange to CI money? I've conflicting stories so I'm hoping to find the correct answer.

Thanks in advance for any information. I still 4 months but reading everything in the forum is making me too excited, I wish I was going tomorrow.

US money will be accepted everywhere, but you will receive CI as change. It can be a little confusing. $1 US is worth $.80 CI, and conversely $1 CI is worth $1.25 US.

I get cash (CI) from one of the many ATMs on the island. I get a better exchange rate ($.82 vs. $.80).

Correct & well put NorthSideSue!

No worries about exchanging your US for CI. You can use either form for payment. Exchange rate is pretty good at the grocery stores as well. The only exception to US change back is in Georgetown when cruise ships are in port. Some stores will just give you US if they think you are on a ship. Otherwise, expect CI as change.

Enjoy your trip...

Mickey - US dollars are widely accepted and unless you plan on exchanging a very large sum of money the difference between what you will get at the stores vs. going to the bank is nominal.

Here's a couple of currency convertors:

Does the conversion from US$ to CI$ attract any commission?

The problem coming from the UK is that I have to buy US$ here then convert to CI$ on arrival, ie 2 transactions. I could use the ATMs but the banks charge a hefty fee for the privilege :? Or possibly bring Sterling and convert directly?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
