we will have a 6 1/2 layover and want to go to a nice beach, swim, lounge around, etc. then have a way to take a shower and get dressed.(not just an outdoor shower) anywhere with day passes where we could do that? and not terribly far from airport??

Comfort Suites is the only resort that I know of that still allows cruise passengers for free. They are right on the beach with a pool, bar and games but no lounge chairs so you would have to bring towels. They are right next to the Marriott, where you can rent just about any water toy you like. Just walk around to the back and you will see a pool bar called Stingers. Tell them you are Activity Guide members and you will be welcome and treated well.

donnajsd,

As I read your question, it seems to be that you're talking about a lay-over between flights, and not that you're going to be on the island as a cruise ship passenger. Nevertheless, I don't know of any resort or beach area that would have a changing room and indoor shower available for you to use. If there are not many cruise ships in port on the day that you will be there, you might like just going to the Royal Palms. They have a very nice facility and their bathroom has a little changing room, but the shower is outdoors.

The other option, as Joe mentioned, is hanging around the pool at Comfort Suites, but you would have to have a towel to lay down on the beach there. At least at Royal Palms, you would have a beach chair for a small fee.

Both Comfort Suites and the Royal Palms would be within 15 to 30 minutes (at most) from the airport.

If you need our help to figure out how many cruise ships are in port on which day, just ask. There's a cool website for that.

Hope this helps,

Char
