What is Zumba®?
Zumba is an aerobic exercise routine inspired by Latin dance. It was founded by Miami-based dancer and choreographer Alberto 'Beto' Perez and two local entrepreneurs: Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. Zumba sells DVDs/videos through its website and via infomercials.
On October 15, 2007 Zumba® was showcased on the Today Show. During 2008, Zumba® was introduced to the world via The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post and many other media outlets.
A Zumba® workout mixes body sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps derived from exciting upbeat Latin music. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms to tone and sculpt the body. It targets areas such as the gluteals, legs, arms, abdominals, and the heart.
Participants do not have to know how to dance to do Zumba®.
The move combinations and Latin rhythms strive to create a party-like atmosphere - a more "feel happy" workout than may be experienced in other group exercise class types.
A Zumba® class is typically not formulaic in that instructors often add on their own music choices and choreography to make their class presentations unique.
Zumba® incorporates an upbeat mix of predominately Caribbean musical genres into its programs:
