Hi, Can anyone give me some input on the Reef Resort? My husband and I could use advice about nearby night life & transportation (public, taxi's, or rentals). We like to have a bit of fun while on vacation but we are not divers. We do snorkel though.

Thankyou, Linda

HI LSt

I would really recommend renting a car particularly if you want to do some things around the island. You are kind of isolated there if you don't have wheels.

I'm sure that you can snorkel right off the property. We stay over in the Rum Point area. A day over there is fun, the Botanic Garden is very pretty and dinner at the Lighthouse is delicious.

Also Cayman Kayaks has tours that are nice too. I've been on a day tour and also a bioluminescent tour which only goes out on dark nights. I preferred the day tour, but the biolum was really very interesting and I'm glad that we did that.

Thanks for the advice. We are indeed thinking about renting a car but we also are wondering how accomodating the bus schedule is and does it go out that far? If we go into town at night for some fun, we don't want to be driving back if we have some adult beverages....wink, wink. Soooooo, I'm a bit confused about how to handle it all. How pricey is a cab ride? Thanks again for the help.

A cab from the airport was about $65 to Rum Point--so maybe a little less to the Reef---but not sure. I really wouldn't count on the bus, particularly at night. You might want to contact where you're staying and ask them about that to make sure, unless someone on the forum has had some experience with public transportation to east end. I have seen occasional busses running--but not too often. I do know someone who took a bus into town from the Botanic Garden....but you are still a ways from there.

Maybe you'll need a designated driver.

Thanks again Shell, I definately will contact the hotel. I may just look into changing to a different hotel that is more centrally located or closer to Georgetown. Those are expensive cab rides and given that we planned on renting a car, the cost is getting higher and higher. I love any and all suggestions from anyone. This is a very helpful, well put together site.

If you stay in the 7Mile Beach area you are pretty close to everything--but it is a very different island experience from staying on the other side of the island.

Joe had a posting somewhere on the forum about choosing accommodations based on your life style. Check it out and see if it helps you.

You will be a lot closer to everything on Seven Mile Beach. The gas prices in caymans are even higher than the US, MUCH HIGHER! Cabs are going to have to charge more too.

Joe - Why don't you have CAYBREW on the "GO EAST" tour???

The Reef is very nice, but small, compared to 7 Mile Beach resorts. We stayed at the resort next door during the week of May 5. We had dinner at Castaways at the Reef one night and found it very good and reasonably priced. The Reef is the home of BFM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is not a lot of night life on the East End. It is quiet and lovely. The beach is clean and the snorkeling is adequate. It is pretty windy, which churns the waters a little. There is a Foster's Express grocery right across the street and the Olde English Bakery in the same center opens early for breakfast pastries and hot sandwiches.

Thanks Joe, You won't have to twist my arm on the Caybrew, teehee. Thankyou also Kentucky person, I think we will remain with original reservation at the reef and enjoy the beauty of it all. Anyone have any info on the celebrity golf the week of July 27th?

You guys are great !!!!!

Thanks, Linda

LST..........the snorkeling is MUCH more than adequate there and the East End has the most wonderful tradewinds.......one of the reasons we prefer that side of the island. 7MB is close to everything, but as one other person mentioned, it's all about what kind of experience you are looking for.........as for us, we prefer the quiet, the great snorkeling right off the beach, the tradewinds and the lack of crowds on the East End.....it's also nice being close to Rum Point, the Botanic Garden and Kaibo........it's all in what you are looking for. You are going to have the BEST time no matter which place you choose!

Definitely rent a car. Being on the East End, there is very limited transport otherwise. If you love to snorkel, the resorts in that area have docks that house schools of tarpon and snapper, as well as the occasional barracuda and lobster. The car will allow you to visit many of the other snorkeling areas on the island at your leisure. Don't forget Smith cove and cemetary beach. We rented a Jimny, a tiny jeep like ragtop from Andy's. I really had fun driving that little thing.
