CAL announced it would be resuming its Chicago service this winter. They will also add service to Dulles.

This is the report from the October 1 news conference:

"The National Flag carrier will be introducing a direct flight to the US capital when it begins flying into the gateway of Washington’s Dulles airport. And it looks like Chicago will be "Cayman Airways’ kinda town" once again as the airline re-introduces the previously failed route this winter. According to the board chair, Angelyn Hernandez, both routes have been carefully researched and have revealed considerable demand.

Speaking at a special press briefing on Wednesday morning (1 October), flanked by the airline’s new management line-up, she said that the decisions to introduce these two routes were sound commercial decisions to enhance airlift. “We intend to keep an eye on the US market in the future but for this winter we are introducing Washington and Chicago for sound business reasons,” said Hernandez.

First introduced in December 2003, Chicago was dropped by the airline last year, but Hernandez says the route was not a complete failure. “We think it was the wrong days and times and perhaps it wasn’t marketed as well as it could have been. Managed properly we believe this will be a successful gateway,” she added.

The chair also confirmed the Tourism Minister’s recent announcement that the airline had decided not to purchase two Embraer E-170s as had been planned for this winter, but she said CAL was looking at acquiring on lease another type of aircraft related to the current "family", she said, adding that CAL had not abandoned the project but postponed it.

“After looking carefully at the immediate needs and requirements for the winter season, the decision has been made to temporarily postpone the acquisition of a different type of aircraft at this time. The team is actively pursuing a plan which would seamlessly fit the airline’s present operational structure and which would meet our plans for this winter season,” she said. “The airline is mindful of its obligations to act as the economic lever for all three islands, and is doing all that it can within its means to meet such obligations and expectations,” she said.

Hernandez also said that the airline was currently enjoying record performances despite all the turmoil in the market. CAL VP of Finance Paul Tibbetts said passenger revenue for the month of August came in at US$5.8 million, which he said was a new record. He also said the airline has significantly exceeded average load factors of previous years for eight of the past 12 months.

With a reduction in overall running and maintenance costs, coupled with an increase in passengers, Tibbetts said they were coping with the massive increase in fuel costs.

“In the past two to three years, the investment in the Lufthansa audit by the Ministry and the subsequent assistance of Lufthansa in assisting the airline to implement procedures and tools have already borne fruit and will continue to do so in the long term,” Hernandez added. “We started out by calling this the ‘turnaround plan’ and we have managed to turn the airline in a positive direction. The numbers are evidence of this.”

She said while there were challenges on the horizon, with efficient tools and procedures the airline stood ready to serve the Cayman Islands. She said it was important to note that the success was a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the staff. “Demands have been made on them and it has not always been easy changing established ways of doing business or even adapting to matters, but they rose to the challenges. It is important that we continue to harness the loyalty and talent that we have within the company. The Board is pleased with the results of the past two three years, but recognizes that there is still much more to attend to,” she added.

Hernandez also introduced three brand-new additions to the management team: VP Commercial Paul Mooney, Robert Hartsfield, the new Commercial Director of Revenue Programs, and Olivia Scott, the new Manager of Corporate Communications."

No mention of the days they will be flying.

I keep bringing this up---but CAL misses out on a lot of passengers because they don't post those winter flights until winter is almost upon us.

Thanks for the info Sue

Shelly :-)

Shelly - I was thinking the same thing. If they posted their flights for purchase, or at least pre-ordering, then folks like me, could decide whether or not we would fly them. Now, there's no decision as we booked in May for January 2009. And we're flying out of Chicago.

Oh well. And they wonder why the Chicago route "failed."

Madtown Tim

Same with us--we book in Feb. or March for the following Dec. We did fly on CAL a couple of years ago and got a great rate too. We were delighted to fly nonstop from Chicago.

However I do have to admit that the plane going down there in mid dec. was pretty empty. Great for us, but not for the airline.

Last year I tried to book our daughter and her family, but they hadn't posted the schedule when we were ready to book. We book early because many years ago there used to be problems getting seats over Christmas vacation---so we started the early booking to make sure we got there on the the day we wanted.

Do you drive to Chicago or do you fly from Madison to chicago?

Shelly :-)

I agree that CAL's planning leaves a lot to be desired. It's fine for those of us who don't have to book lodging, but not for the majority of folks.

Shelly,

We'll be driving down to Chicago from Madtown. The flights from Madison to anywhere right now are extremely stupid. They've cut flights all over the place and are focusing on business travelers primarily.

We've got a 6am flight out, so we'll most likely flip our sleep schedule on the 3rd so that we sleep during the evening and can enjoy our first day in Cayman. Either that, or we'll just grab a hotel close to O'hare and then head out for the airport from there.

More than likely, we'll just drive down that night.

Yah--we are on a 6am flight also ---last year our flight left really early too. I think we had to get up at 2:30 and we only live 30 minutes from O'Hare. Our son is flying out of St. Louis and he also has to catch a 6am flight. I wonder if they are scheduling really early morning flights to Miami so that people can make a variety of connections and they can get away with fewer flights.

It took us awhile to check in too---they don't have that many attendants on duty at that hour and security took a little while too--- I was starting to get a little nervous about the time. So don't cut your time short because you think it's early in the am and no one will be at the airport. There were a ton of people in the lines to check in.

BTW--I went to U. of W.

Shelly :-)

The nonstop flights between Chicago (ORD) and GCM begin on December 17th, flying on Wednesdays and Sundays until april 22, 2009.
The nonstop flights between Washington (DCA) amd GCM begin December 15th flying on Tuesdays and Saturdays until April 25, 2009.
One difference this year is the plane and crew will not be overnighting at O'Hare. This will be a large cost saving for CAL.
Both flights leave GCM at 8:00 AM. The flights from ORD and DCA leave just after noon.
Hope this is successful for them. It is certainly the best way for us to get there!

Hi Guys,

Agree witha all your comments and glad they added the Chicago route back in. Just booked 5 of us for February at a great rate. Not sure why they say this route was never popular. Everytime we have flown in Feb and march there was hardly ever an empty seat.

Greetings from Madison also Madtown Tim. Never had much luck flying out of Madison either.

See Ya, Swanny

I've dealt with the "early" morning flights out of Milwaukee where I'm there an hour or more before any of the counter folk have arrived.

Our flights actually go through Charleston so hopefully, the 30 minute turnaround time there won't be an issue there.

I guess I didn't notice that there were this many folks from Madison on the boards. I am glad to see that there are this many Midwesterners on the boards. Gives me a homie feeling. Smile
