We have the American 8:15 a.m. flight out on Sunday. The only other flight is a Cayman Air flight about the same time.

Can we get away with a 90 min. arrival time at the airport?

TIA,

Sue <-- in MAJOR relaxed mode on day #6 . . . Very Happy

I know they do tell you to get to the airport 2 hours in advance. We were on American on an off day. I think we got there close to 2 hours in advance--maybe an hour and 45 minutes. It kind of depends how long it takes to get thru the check in line. Sometimes it's a little pokey--but it is faster than it was for the few years after 911 when they hand checked all your luggage, including what was going under the plane. Usually I get in the line while my husband takes the rental car back and then he joins me in the line. That way I've worked myself up in the line a little. I don't know what time the car rental places open. You might just have to leave the keys at that hour. It's been awhile since we've left that early, so I can't remember.

You could probably get away with 90 minutes. It won't be crowded. But I would hate to give you that advice and then have a problem. I would check what time the ticket counter opens in GC. Myself, I prefer to be early and not have to worry.

Hope you are having a good trip

Shelly :-)

How are you enjoying Morritt's? We arrive on February 10th. Also I was wondering how you found out how many flights were leaving at that time?

I agree with Shelly. Get there 2 hours ahead if you can so there is no worry. We got through security quickly and waited in the lounge for over an hour. We worried more about our short 1 hour turnaround in Newark on the way back. Our luggage was the last off the carousel and we hurried through with the re-checking process and just made our plane to Boston with a few minutes to spare. BTW, why do we have to retrieve and re-check our bags when it was clear they were just waving us all through the checkpoint anyway!?? While the airlines refuse to admit it, I think they are becoming more lax about bag checking these days.

Well, the problem with arriving 2 hours in advance of an 8:15 flight is arriving at the airport at 6:15! Very Happy At least Andy's opens at 6:00, but still. . .

We're staying an extra night because of flight availability, so I scoped out the message boards and we're staying at Shangri La B&B. Part of staying at a B&B is enjoying the breakfast, so I hope that will still work out!!

Jen, we're having a great time. Everything is perfect. I love watching my husband's face grow more and more relaxed as his emotional and energy tanks get filled up!

From reading the boards, I knew which airlines service GCM, so I just checked the flights from here on each of their websites.

Jen,

I see that you are a "newbie" too. It looks like we will be there at the same time. Maybe we will run into you on island. We will have 4 kids with us.

We ended up getting to the airport around 6:30, deciding it was dumb to push it! Very Happy There was a pretty long line at the American counter, and the departure lounge was plenty full.

We learned a lesson the hard way in these post 9/11 days. My husband was one of a handful of passengers chosen at random to be fully screened. Twice. The first time was when he went through security. The second time, they picked him to go through his checked bag. A desk agent called a list of names and we heard one that sounded similar to his, but both the first and last name were massacred. Sure enough, when we boarded the plane and they asked for his name, they said he had to go back for the bag screen. Lesson learned: in another country (or even in the US), if a name is called out that sounds even remotely like it might be ours, check on it.

BTW, with the new "no liquids" security rule, Tortuga Rum has changed the packaging of their duty-free delights. When I picked up my purchases inside the airport, they wrapped each bottle in bubble wrap and put each one in a tall zip-lock bag, then into the box. Had something disastrous happened once we put our rum in our bags, the mess would have been contained. I'm keeping the wrappings for the next time we take wine with us on a trip!

Oh, and one more point on bringing rum home. We bought four bottles, which they put into two boxes because they're easier to handle than one large box. I was concerned because with our laptop carry-ons and my purse, that made 5 personal items to take on the plane, instead of the allowed 4. But the airline people said it was no problem. Yeayy!

As soon as we took our luggage off the carousel in Miami, we put the boxes inside, there in baggage claim before clearing customs. This worked well since immediately after customs, you drop off your luggage for it to be scanned and then sent on to the next connecting flight.

But boy, was security a MESS upstairs! It was just an ordinary Sunday morning, not Thanksgiving or Christmas or spring break craziness, but the lines for security were unbelievably long. Some people waited over an hour, snaking through the lines. (We were waved to the wheelchair line since I was in a scooter.) Lesson for MIA: if you have to go through security, make sure you have plenty of time! ::::shudder::::

Sue [sorry to leave Paradise, but awfully glad to sleep in my own bed!]

P.S. We had to leave Shangri-La too early to enjoy the cooked breakfast, but they left out muffins and cereal for us the night before so we were able to have SOME kind of breakfast before leaving.

Thank you so much, Suebee, for checking in after you got home, to let us know how this all worked out! I would have guessed that the Cayman airport would not have been too busy at that time of morning, but, evidently it was! So glad that you decided not to take any chances and risk getting there too late! (I think I would have done the same....).

Good info and tips on everything else you mentioned....thank you! Sorry you could only stay one night at Shangri-La, and had to miss the cooked breakfast, but that was nice of them to leave you something to eat anyway.

Glad you made it home safe and sound --- now, it's time to plan your next trip!
