Has anyone traveled to Cayman Islands recently without a passport? Will they let you in with your birth certificate and government issued ID or will they turn you back to your country? We are coming from the United States flying in on a private jet and we are being told that our birth certificates with be fine, since we do not have a passport and there is no time to get one. Also we will be yachting back to the states. Is a passport required for sea travel???

I'd try the TSA website; www.tsa.gov

It's really not the Cayman Islands that require a U.S. Passport......they've always been fine with just a Birth Certificate from U.S. citizens, and still are. It's the United States that requires a passport for re-entry by air into the United States. They had relaxed that rule for a few months, because of how slow the Passports were being processed, but I think that the rule is back in force now.

I have no idea how it works when you re-enter the United States by yacht. I think that cruise ship passengers still can travel with just a birth certificate, at least for a little while longer, so maybe you'll be okay.

No doubt about it, you have to contact the U.S. State Department and ask them.

Supposedly the passport backlog has been cleared. I just receive my renewed passport, it only took about 8 weeks with standard processing. For a few dollars extra you can get your passport expedited and receive it in about 1-2 weeks. Depending on when you are traveling this might be your best option.

I had applied for a passport on 10/1/07, chose expedited service and had a new one in my hands on 10/13/07 so the backlog is definitely over with!
