Hi all,

I've been planning to book with SpiritAir for our March 17 - 22 '08 flight; I've been watching the rates all summer....now I get the next day option only from Spirit Reservation screens, due to the flights being "booked" - already?

Is this normal? It's still so far off, I can't believe that.

Is anyone seasoned in booking flights from Detroit to GC, and can you give me any advice?

The dates we booked at Turtle Nest were the only dates they had available, so we need to find a flight!

Thanks so much for any input you can give. Brenda

Hi BREEZER -

There is a priority to get the residents who evacuated back on island so they can properly service the visitors. Your best bet is to keep checking with all of our carriers and sooner or later there may be a cancellation. Have you tried standby?

We've flown connections from Detroit to Cayman several times. They have been on the major airlines though...NW, Continental, etc... I've heard mixed reports on Spirit. If you have set dates then you will need to find the cheapest rate with any carrier that fly's to Cayman and should rethink sticking with Spirit. Many of the major carriers fly to Cayman.

I don't know why they would be booked. Unless people were trying to get there before the start of school and Dean pushed the date back and they rebooked for spring break?!? I don't think anyone but the airline could answer that question truthfully. Like I suggested, you should try another airline if you aren't 100% determined on flying Spirit. Otherwise, sit back and watch for airfare. We've booked our March trip airfare in January after the holiday rush and got pretty good rates.

I've found a flight thru AA that we could grab...I would like to watch the rates because it's so early. Sounds like you think Spirit being booked for March already is not normal also...so I will watch this AA flight until about October, I would think would be safe! Just wanted to be sure that GC flights for some reason didn't get booked way early in advance. We've never went before. Thanks.

You should be fine. We've booked 8 weeks out before and didn't have a problem for 5 of us! No worries!

Also check with Delta. You'll change planes in Atlanta which is better than Miami with AA.

I know mod "gardengirl" got a good deal out of Detroit. And there is really no reason to book it this early, unless you want the airline to collect interest on your money for 7 months! Confused

We booked with Delta about 8 weeks out and got a great rate. You change planes in Houston or Atlanta but its not to bad. They by far had the best fare. We were going to try Cayman Air but they are discontinuing a connection in our area and it made the flights inconvient. palm

And another opinion--we book very far in advance. because we go over the Christmas holidays...I think if you see a good fare, you should grab it--as long as you've looked around and have a pretty good idea of what the fares are.

We usually fly American from Chicago and connect in Miami, which is a pain. But on some of the internet booking sites they put together routes that you might not put together yourself and sometimes they have very good fares. I found a great fare for our daughter and family over christmas that went through Tampa from chicago---she liked the idea of not going through Miami

Good Luck

Shelly :-)

Amen. Anything other than Miami is good. We flew US Airways from DTW last winter and connected in Charlotte. We really liked going through Charlotte. It was smooth and almost enjoyable.

About flying out of Detroit - this was our first, but not the last time. We live in Central Ohio and saved about $1848 total by flying out of Detroit instead of Columbus. There were 4 of us, our tickets each $348 RT Delta when Delta out of Columbus were $810 each!

What's up with that?! Dayton is also cheaper than Columbus, though I haven't flown out of there. The Cincinnati/Covington airport is usually as high or higher than Columbus. When I do a search I select an option that gives me several locations to look at.

We booked that towards the end of February, first of March for our trip end of June, 90-120 days out. I'm not sure if they went any lower, but I was happy to hop on the deal we got. Smile

FYI - Since we had a bit of a drive to get there, we stayed at the Westin that is connected to the airport and they parked our car for the time we were gone. It is right next to the Delta counters so couldn't be anymore convenient. A room at the Westin wasn't cheap but the convenience and parking included was completely worth it to us and barely placed a dent in the airfare savings we were able to get. When we got back, they pulled our car up to the curb and we were good to go. Cool Cool Cool

I will definitely check out Detroit next time. Wink The only bad part was not getting to meet up with snorkeler at 5 am because we were in different terminals. Maybe next time!

edited for Spelling, still seems too early, must be Monday!

Breezer wave

Our last two vacations were booked through a travel site and I think they were booked roughly 8 weeks before our trip and I had no problems. Although we did not fly out of Detroit, but still have not had problems flying out of O'Hare.

Our flight to GC was booked and Delta was our carrier........needless to say, I was happy to have Atlanta as opposed to Miami as my connection. It was a breeze. dancing

Sometimes you may find a better deal..........depends on what you think you need to do.

We just got back. We flew from Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale, then on to GC. No problems at all. We flew through Spirit, they had one of their crazy $13 airfare specials so we figured what the heck, lets go someplace we've never been. No problems at all booking 8 weeks prior this time of year, but I would expect it to be a different story in the winter.........everyone wants out of here then!

I always book thru travelocity or orbitz. You should be able to find

a decent fare. We booked for February this year and got a flight

for $339 with Continental Airlines. If you go to Continentals

site, they have the cheapest fare so far this year.

Good Luck
