Is it advisable to carry mediacations in original cantainers? I usually put them in a daily/weekly container--otherwise they will take up my whole carry-on. Embarassed Only one is a pain killer so maybe that one should be in the original. Please advise. idea butterfly

Vintage Lady - while I've never had a problem I always travel with meds in their original containers so that if something happens to me people know what I"m taking! I was stopped once going into Honduras and they inspected each medication bottle that I had with me at the time and made sure my name matched the name on the bottles, that was strange but that's been the only time I've ever had that happen.

I would carry in the original bottles and bring your pill case with you and just fill it when you arrive.

Unfortuately, I take a lot of meds. And caring all the bottles is really difficult. I use daily pill boxes. But I also use insulin and have needles and such. So, I had my MD write on his letter head a note explaining I was a diabetic and cared such and such equipment. I did have a problem in CI going thru customs in the airport. Ignorance on their part.

I also type out a letter for myself with the medication name, dosage, script number, name and phone number of my pharmecy. And what the medication is for.

One of my suitcases got damaged in transport. And I lost a good portion of my pills. The downtown pharm was so kind and helped me so much but they may not have drugs named the same as in the US. So it helped them help me.

You should see me go thru airport security with my insulin pump. Scare them to death.

But I still keep coming!!!!!

I usually take things in their original bottles. I read somewhere that you are supposed to do that. (I bring the weekly plastic containers along and fill them in GC)

Actually one year I ended up in the GC hospital and just took all of my meds with me when I checked in. I don't know how that would have gone over if I had just those plastic weekly containers, which I use at home all the time.

I would say that you should never pack medications in suitcases that you are checking through. It's too easy for something to happen to them.

Have a good trip

Shelly :-)

Hi Karen2

I put them in my purse or in my carry-on. The only time we had an issue was when we weren't allowed to take our rollaboard on the plane and they wanted to gate check it. This hasn't happened in quite a few years----but I then took all my meds out of the carry on and put them in what I was carrying on board--just in case something happened to the luggage.

Have fun

Shelly :-)

Always carry your medication in a bag that you will be able to carry on board the aircraft, luggage gets lost and you don't want to be without any necessary medication or spend part of your vacation explaining to a pharmacist why you need a refill whilst visiting! That's time better spent sipping drinks with umbrellas in them whilst lolling on the sandy beach Very Happy

Shelly & CindyLou:

Thanks again for the advice. With two stops on the way down to GC, I sure hope my bags make it. I will carry my meds with me, for sure!

Since I can't go without my meds, I take a double supply of meds in their original bottle in my carry-on and then pack in my luggage another double supply of meds in those daily dosage containers. I figure if there's a problem with customs or if my luggage gets lost, I've got a backup either way. Also, if I get stuck in the Caymans (fun!), I've got extra meds too. Hope that helps.

Happy Travels,

Erika Smile

I had a problem one time. I use insulin and the needles in the bag even though safe/unalbe to jab anyone, the custom men freaked. I advise a MD letter esp for insulin and any pain meds that might be controled. Oxycotin and such. Also I always take my pills in the bottles from pharm. In case I need an emergency refil, it helps the druggist in CI and in the long run helps yourself. caymandj

I took a ton of meds with us this trip, both OTC and prescription--also took 2 over size cough medicines in my carry on--plus I had several bottles of spices (which maybe they thought looked suspicious)---Every airport ended up hand checking my bag, but I didn't have any problems other than that.

If I'm not mistaken I thought the airlines said it was best to carry medications in the original container.......hubby is on several Rx's and we too carry them on.....would hate to have them get lost. Confused :confused
