Capri - There are no rabies in the Cayman Islands so arriving pets must undergo a quarentine period and be accompanied with health certificates. There is a thread on this in the Local Residents forum. Wink

Hi,

I have a link to a site about which countries allow pets and what their requirements are:

http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/CaymanIslands.cfm

It does not say dogs have to be quarantined. You just pay the gov't a fee, and have a vet's letter saying your dog is parasite free and has had a topical solution put on it for ticks, plus has had a rabies shot and other appropriate vaccinations which I have to find out which ones they want.

Maybe this info is wrong. I will most certainly look into it further, thanks!

As for baggies with bread in them, I bring them for when I snorkel with the fish to attract them towards me. I had some go into a feeding frenzy and actually bite me once!

Bye, Capri

Joe would you like me to send this to you so you can post it somewhere?

SHELLNYNJ - Thanks, but I don't have OCR sofware for my scanner. Maybe we can find the info online so I don't have to type a 5 page document.

The below two documents should be the ones you need that refer to the bringing of pets to GC.. the process takes some time because you have to wait for exposure tests to be proven..

Document 1

CAYMAN ISLANDS

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE IMPORTATION OF DOGS AND CATS INTO THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

Animals Law (Law 8 of 1976)

Please read this brochure carefully, as the requirements may be different from those of other countries. Failure to meet these requirements exactly will result in your pet being refused entry into the Cayman Islands. Your local veterinarian will be able to help you with the requirements.

A. PERMIT TO IMPORT

All dogs and cats entering the Cayman Islands must be accompanied by an import permit issued by the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture. You must provide evidence that your animal complies with all of our import requirements before we will issue an Import Permit. Application forms are available from:

Veterinary Services

Department of Agriculture

P.O. Box 459 G.T.

Grand Cayman

Cayman Islands, B.W.I.

Tel: (345) 947-3090

Fax: (345) 947-2634

Email: agrivet@candw.ky

B. IMPORT REQUIREMENTS

In order to bring your dog or cat into the Cayman Islands, the following procedures must be carried out in the order shown below:

1) Your pet must first be permanently identified with a microchip transponder or tattoo.

Only microchip brands accepted by the International Standards Organisation (Standard 11784 or Annex A to standard 11785) should be used. These include some AVID?, Home Again?, and Identichip? microchips? those that are read by 134.2 kHz scanners. Please note: not all microchips conform to this standard.

2) After identification, a licensed veterinarian using an approved inactivated adjuvanted vaccine must then vaccinate your pet against rabies.

If your pet was vaccinated before being fitted with a microchip or tattoo, it must be vaccinated again. The vaccine must be administered not less than 30 days and not more than one year prior to shipment. Your pet must be at least twelve (12) weeks old before the primary rabies vaccine is given.

3) A blood test must be taken after vaccination to check for protective antibodies against rabies. The blood test, a neutralising antibody titration test, must be carried out by a laboratory approved by the government of the country of origin for carrying out such a test not more than 24 months prior to shipment. The test result must show a serum antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml and must bear the animal?s permanent identification number.

4) Your pet will be eligible for entry into the Cayman Islands six (6) months after the date the blood sample that gave a successful test result was drawn.

WAIVER OF SIX-MONTH WAITING PERIOD:

The following categories of pets will not have to undergo the six-month waiting period after the blood test is taken:

a) Pets over 9 months of age that can demonstrate a rabies vaccination history of at least two vaccinations not more than one year and not less than 6 months apart. The permanent identification (microchip or tattoo) must be applied before the most recent rabies vaccination was administered.

b) Local residents: Pets that have been resident continuously in the Cayman Islands for at least six months prior to travel. This exemption refers to pets resident in the Cayman Islands that are leaving the territory to return within 1 year of departure (Refer to Annex I: Guidelines for local pets and pets resident in the Cayman Islands).

c) Pets travelling directly from territories recognised by the Cayman Islands Government as being rabies free (See section E a).

5) Within 14 days of the scheduled date of travel your pet must be treated for tapeworms and ticks.

For tapeworms: a preparation containing praziquantel at a dose rate of 5mg/kg body weight.

For ticks: a topical preparation known to have residual action. A product containing fipronil is preferred. Other products include amitraz, pyrethrins, and permethrins.

NOTE The following products are NOT acceptable: Shampoos, collars, preparations that are licensed for control of fleas only (e.g. Program? Advantage?, Revolution? or Sentinel?).

6) Also within 14 days of the scheduled date of travel, your pet must be examined and issued with an Official Veterinary Health Certificate (see section on Health Certificates).

The health certificate may be issued by a licensed veterinarian but must be endorsed (stamp or seal and signature) by an official veterinarian who is employed full time by the government of the country of origin (e.g. USDA, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, DEFRA in the UK).

7) A completed Application form, Official Health Certificate, a copy of the rabies titre laboratory report and an application fee (single entry: CI$50.00 (US$61.00); multiple entry passport: CI$150 (US$183) must be submitted to the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture for processing.

The documents will be processed and a reply given to you within three (3) working days.

8) If successful, an Import Permit will be issued. Unless otherwise specified, the import permit is valid for 14 days from the date of the Official Health Certificate.

The permit can be sent to you by fax. Attach the permit or a faxed copy of the permit, along with the original copies of the health documents to the carrier in which your pet will be transported.

9) You must give at least 48 hours notice of expected date and time of arrival, along with details of the vessel or airline (e.g. Airline and flight number). See part G: Transportation Instructions.

C. OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE

An Official Veterinary Health Certificate is a document issued and endorsed by a veterinarian employed full time by the government of the country of origin (e.g. USDA, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, DEFRA). The document may be filled out and signed by a licensed veterinarian, but must also be endorsed by a government veterinarian.

The Official Health Certificate is valid for a period of 14 days only.

The official health certificate must have the following information:

1) The name and address of the owner/agent;

2) A description of the animal(s) to be imported;

3) The microchip or tattoo identification number of the animal(s);

4) The date of the last rabies vaccination (the vaccine make and batch number must be on the certificate);

5) The date of other routine vaccinations;

6) The seal number of the container in which the pet is being transported along with the signature and stamp of the official affixing the seal. (See part G Transportation Instructions);

7) Certificate statements as outlined below.

The health certificate must have the following statements:

As best as can be ascertained the animal is not infected with any communicable disease and is free from external parasites.

1) The animal has not been kept within 30 miles of an area officially quarantined for Foot and Mouth Disease during the past 30 days (this does not apply to dogs and cats arriving directly from territories recognised as free from Foot and Mouth disease, e.g. the UK, USA, Canada or CARICOM territories).

2) The animal has been continually resident in the country of origin for the past 6 months prior to export and as best as can be ascertained has not been exposed to rabies or has not been present within the past 6 months in an officially quarantined or designated rabies area.

3) The animal has been treated on the day of examination with an acaricidal preparation, which is known to have residual action against ticks (include the name of the acaricidal product).

4) The animal has been treated on the day of examination with a preparation containing praziquantel at a dose rate of 5mg/kg body weight, which is known to be effective against tapeworms.

5) The animal was subjected to a neutralising antibody titration test within the past 24 months with a result of 0.5IU/ml or greater.

The certificate should be written in English. In such circumstances as may be warranted, it should also be written in a language understood by the certifying veterinarian.

D. PROHIBITIONS

1. In accordance with the Animals Law (Law 8 of 1976), no animal of any description may be imported into the Cayman Islands from any country in Asia, Africa or Central and South America. Other territories from which dogs and cats are prohibited are Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

a) Single entry permit (Application fee CI $50.00 / US$61.00): this permit is valid for 14 days from the date of the Official Health Certificate. This permit is appropriate for pets moving to the Cayman Islands on a permanent or long-term basis and for all animals entering the Cayman Islands for the first time.

b) Multiple entry permit /Animal Passport (Application fee CI $150.00 / US$ 183.00): valid for a period of one year. This permit is appropriate for pets travelling to and from the Cayman Islands more than once a year. Payment can be in the form of a bank draft or International Money order or a cheque drawn on a Cayman Islands bank, made payable to the Cayman Islands Government.

NOTES ON ANIMAL PASSPORTS

i. The Animal Passport expires one year after the date of issue and can be renewed on an annual basis provided that there is no lapse in the annual rabies booster vaccination.

ii. When applying for renewal of the passport you must provide evidence of rabies vaccine history such as copies of both the current and the previous rabies vaccination certificates.

iii. Laboratory tests to determine the level of protection must be performed every 24 months. It is recommended that these be performed 30 days after the date of that year?s rabies vaccination. These test results must also be provided, if necessary, when applying for renewal of a multiple entry permit/passport.

iv. If your pet?s stay outside the Cayman Islands is more than fourteen days, a new Official Health Certificate must be obtained and presented along with the passport every time the animal re-enters the Cayman Islands.

v. Under most circumstances, a pet qualifying under these conditions may leave and re-enter the Cayman Islands without obtaining an Official Health Certificate provided the length of stay abroad is less than 14 days.

vi. Your pet must be resident in the Cayman Islands at the time of application for a passport. Passports cannot be issued to pets entering the Cayman Islands for the first time.

G. TRANSPORTATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. All animals travelling to the Cayman Islands must do so by the most direct route possible.

2. Animals travelling by air must be carried in an approved container, which meets standards set, by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

3. The animals must travel as manifest cargo. All documents accompanying the animal must be affixed to the container.

4. If travelling other than by direct route from the country of origin, through a territory not on the approved list, the door of the container must be sealed with a government approved seal in the country of origin before the animal is loaded onto the aircraft or vessel with the number on the seal entered onto the health certificate by an airline or government official (e.g., agriculture, customs).

H. INSPECTION ON ARRIVAL

Possession of a valid Import Permit does not guarantee entry. All animals and documents are subject to examination at the port of entry by an approved inspector. Should the animal fail to meet entry requirements, the Chief Agricultural and Veterinary Officer may at his discretion and at the expense of the importer, order that the animal be refused entry and returned immediately or be destroyed. Detention or quarantine is NOT an option in the Cayman Islands.

All dogs staying in the Cayman Islands for longer than 30 days must be licensed with the Department of Agriculture.

THE CHIEF AGRICULTURAL AND VETERINARY OFFICER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ENTRY OF ANY ANIMAL FOR ANY REASON.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

GUIDELINES FOR TRAVELLING WITH LOCAL PETS AND PETS RESIDENT IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS

Annex I to Conditions Governing The Importation Of Dogs And Cats Into The Cayman Islands Animals Law (Law 8 Of 1976)

These guidelines are for local pets and pets that have been continuously resident in the Cayman Islands for at least six months. Persons wishing to travel from and to the Cayman Islands on a repeated basis may obtain a multiple entry import permit (Animal Passport). Application forms are available from:

Veterinary Services

Department of Agriculture

P.O. Box 459 G.T.

Grand Cayman

Cayman Islands, B.W.I.

Tel: (345) 947-3090

Fax: (345) 947-2634

Email: agrivet@candw.ky

OBTAINING AN ANIMAL PASSPORT

A) PRELIMINARY PREPARATIONS (To be done at least six weeks in advance of any travel plans):

The following procedures must be carried out in the order shown below:

1) Your pet must first be permanently identified with a microchip transponder or tattoo.

Only microchip brands accepted by the International Standards Organisation (Standard 11784 or Annex A to standard 11785) should be used. These include some AVID?, Home Again?, and Identichip? microchips? those that are read by 134.2 kHz scanners. Please note: not all microchips conform to this standard.

2) After identification, a licensed veterinarian using an approved inactivated adjuvanted vaccine must then vaccinate your pet against rabies.

(Currently, only the Department of Agriculture is authorised to administer rabies vaccines in the Cayman Islands.)

If your pet was vaccinated before being fitted with a microchip or tattoo it must be vaccinated again. The vaccine must be administered not less than thirty days and not more than one year prior to shipment. Your pet must be at least twelve (12) weeks old before the primary rabies vaccine is given.

[N.B. The Department of Agriculture strongly recommends that animals that have received only a primary vaccine against rabies be given a booster vaccination 30 days later before the blood test is carried out.]

3) A blood test must be taken after vaccination to check for protective antibodies against rabies. The blood test, a neutralising antibody titration test, must be carried out by a laboratory approved by the Cayman Islands Government for carrying out such a test, not more than 24 months prior to travel. The test result must show a serum antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml and must bear the animal?s permanent identification number. (We recommend that you wait 14 to 30 days after vaccination to have the blood test since antibody response to the vaccine usually takes this length of time.)

Once a successful result of the blood test is received, your pet will be eligible to apply for an Animal Passport.

4) A completed Application form, the rabies vaccination certificate, a copy of the rabies titre laboratory report and an application fee (single entry: CI$50.00 (US$61.00); multiple entry passport: CI$150 (US$183) must be submitted to the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture for processing.

The documents will be processed and a reply given to you within three (3) working days.

5) If successful, an Animal Passport will be issued.

B) BEFORE DEPARTURE

6) Within 14 days of the scheduled date of travel your pet must be treated for tapeworms and ticks.

For tapeworms: a preparation containing praziquantel at a dose rate of 5mg/kg body weight.

For ticks: a topical preparation known to have residual action. A product containing fipronil is preferred. Other approved products include amitraz, pyrethrins, and permethrins. The following products are NOT acceptable: shampoos, collars, preparations that are licensed for control of fleas only (e.g. Program? Advantage?, Revolution? or Sentinel?).

7) Also within 14 days of the scheduled date of travel, your pet must be examined and issued with an Export Health Certificate, issued by the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture.

C) RETURNING TO THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

8) If your pets stay overseas has been 14 days or less, you need only present your valid animal passport, along with the Export Health Certificate obtained prior to departure (see (7) above), to the Agricultural Inspector upon arrival.

9) If your pet?s stay overseas is for more than 14 days, you must obtain and present to the Agricultural Inspector upon arrival in the Cayman Islands, in addition to the valid Animal Passport, an Official Health Certificate, as outlined in Section D below.

D) OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE (valid for a period of 14 days only)

An Official Veterinary Health Certificate is a document issued and endorsed by a veterinarian employed full time by the government of the country of origin (e.g. USDA, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, DEFRA in the UK). The document may be filled out and signed by a licensed veterinarian, but must also be endorsed by a government veterinarian.

The Official Health Certificate is valid for a period of 14 days only.

10) The official health certificate must have the following information:

? The name and address of the owner/agent;

? A description of the animal to be imported;

? The microchip or tattoo identification number of the animal;

? The date of the last rabies vaccination (including vaccine make and batch number);

? The date of other vaccinations (DHLPP, FVRCP);

? The seal number of the container in which the pet is being transported along with the signature and stamp of the official affixing the seal. (See part E, Transportation Instructions);

The health certificate must have the following statements:

o As best as can be ascertained the animal is not infected with any communicable disease and is free from external parasites.

o The animal has not been kept within 30 miles of an area officially quarantined for Foot and Mouth Disease during the past 30 days (this does not apply to dogs and cats arriving directly from the USA, Canada or CARICOM territories).

o The animal has been continually resident in the country of origin since exportation from the Cayman Islands, or for the past 6 months prior to export and as best as can be ascertained has not been exposed to rabies or has not been present within the past 6 months in an officially quarantined or designated rabies area

o The animal has been treated on the day of examination with an acaricidal preparation, which is known to have residual action against ticks (include the name of the acaricidal product).

o The animal has been treated on the day of examination with a preparation containing praziquantel at a dose rate of 5mg/kg body weight, which is known to be effective against tapeworms.

o The animal was subjected to a neutralising antibody titration test within the pat 24 months with a result of 0.5IU/ml or greater.

The certificate should be written in English. In such circumstances as may be warranted, it should also be written in a language understood by the certifying veterinarian.

12) All animals travelling to the Cayman Islands must do so by the most direct route possible.

13) Animals travelling by air must be carried in an approved container, which meets standards set, by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

14) The animals must travel as manifest cargo. All documents accompanying the animal must be affixed to the container.

15) If travelling other than by direct route from the country of origin, through a territory not on the approved list, the door of the container must be sealed with a government approved seal in the country of origin before the animal is loaded onto the aircraft or vessel with the number on the seal entered onto the health certificate by an airline or government official (e.g., agriculture, customs).

Hi,

I read through all the info and I think I still see a quarantine is not necessary if you meet their requirements????

The only catch is that some countries and this may be one of them that requires certain vaccines that are considered harmful to a pet because of side effects which can make them ill or kill them.

I've flown to NY with my dog in the cabin 3 times and on the 3rd they asked for a lepto vaccine which protects a dog if it's subject to rats or things contaminated by rats, and the shot is not a very safe one, so I protested and they finally found out it wasn't actually needed unless you go into the Dominican Republic!!!!

I'm not really sure if all the requirements are things that are not harmful to a dog. I would not risk my dog's life to travel to any country if the shots they need are a risk. I have to reread this info and write down what is needed and see if anything is harmful to subject your dog to.

Thank you so much for the information. It was much more than I got at another site which really simplified a dog getting into the Caymans. Between tests and vaccines and fees, it may be quite expensive, even if I could meet all the requirements. My dog is microchipped at least by a company they recommend. I mean, if she was not, I would not put an additional chip in her. Boy, this is a lot of info to wade through!!!!!

What I don't get is they say the U.S.V.I. has a good control over rabies, yet they let in dogs from the U.S. without a quarantine which can then travel to the Caymans if they resided in the U.S.V.I. for 6 months and other requirements are met. I've got to read this in the a.m. with a clear head!!!!

Capri,

I'm quite sure that all of this is meant for dogs who are moving to the Cayman islands, in other words, being "imported", or for dogs who may be going back and forth from the Cayman Islands to the States with their owners during the year. I really doubt seriously that the intent is to allow a tourist to bring their dog with them on vacation. I can't imagine that the permit would be granted for that reason, even if you met all of the requirements.

I could be wrong.....

Hi Char,

Thanks for your input. I will have to do more research. I've read about other island's requirements and if you don't dot every "I" and cross every "t", you can find youself vacationing while your dog is in quarantine.

The U.S.V.I. lets dogs in w/not much of a fuss and Mexico does also, but I've been to the U.S.V.I. and really don't want to go back. I've been to Cozumel and that was great, but it was 17 years ago, so I don't know what it's like there now. At that time, it was very quiet with a small but nice town that had everything, good gifts and great restaurants. I thought about mainland Mexico, but don't like all the touristy areas though I did find a nice spot (Mexican Riviera), but where I looked had a lot of sea grass before you could get to the fish and the hurricane seems to have devastated some of that particular area and sea life.

My goal is always to find calm waters and a very quiet spot, then go to where I have to for snorkeling which is my reason for going to hot spots for vacations. The Caymans sounds just perfect for me. I would stay in a quiet spot and travel to snorkeling.

Bye, Capri
