We watched the "Cayman Went" movie last night. It had finally reached Netflix.

I can see why this movie never made it to theatres.

The basic story or plot is reasonable (probably factual) but the acting and lack of energy makes one yearn for the ending.

The part where the property owner commits suicide by going over the wall while diving is disturbing.

I did enjoy the few shots of the Brac and the some of the diving clips.

A good movie about Cayman Islands would definitely be of benefit to tourism.

This one just isn't it.

Saw it. Loved it. Can't wait to see it all in person. Be there in a few months.

Watched it last night using Netflix instant viewing and I enjoyed it, though admittedly I'm biased because of my love for the Caymans. The writing and acting weren't great, but the movie's message that the lifestyle and beauty of the Brac would be damaged by a large development project rings true.

One of my annual trips to GC will now include a stay on the Brac to enjoy a piece of that lifestyle and, of course, the diving.

I'd be interested to hear what brakker1 thinks of the movie.

I thought it was HOKEY, with a capital aitch! It was shown to the Brackers at the Ashton Ruddy Center before release. As has been mentioned, the plot wasn't all that bad, but certainly not exciting.... didn't get excited about the acting, either. IMHO it was bad......(How bad was it?!!!) It was so bad wifey and I left early, so I don't know if the Brac was saved in the movie or not. In real life there have been several grandiose ideas that never came to fruition here, and I'm glad they didn't. One of the latest was wind-powered generators on the bluff, which might be a good idea since electricity is expensive here. I haven't made up my mind on that one. but I did think the big resort on the east end of the island made about as much sense as windshield wipers on a goat.

brakker1,

Thank you for your opinion. I wouldn't be surprised to find that many on the island share your same feelings.

The windmills on the bluff does sound like an interesting idea to look into further. Is there still talk of it or is the venture dead?

that's just one man's opinion. a lot of the brackers thought it was great!
as for the wind powered generators, i don't think the project's dead, but haven't heard anything about it in a long time. at present there seems to be a big shortage of funds in our government and they're deeply in debt .... sound familiar? seems the primary lender (great britain) wants them to pay some on the debt and has suggested they raise taxes and reduce spending. (does this also sound familiar?)

brakker1,

I am all too familiar with the issues the world seems to be having with debt and the funding of govt. because I work in the budgeting office of my local county govt. I have also been reading about your "lender" suggesting that taxes be implemented. I don't like talk of that!!

We finally got to watch the movie "Cayman Went" last night. I liked it, especially seeing parts of the Brac I've been to before and recognizing some of the "local talent". Yes, the movie could have been more exciting, especially the last half of the film, but overall I thought it was worth watching for any Brac lovers. I'm pretty sure that the film won't drive tourism, like Mediterraneo (Greece) or Monsoon Wedding (India), but I'm planning on buying a copy and asking some of the locals who were in the film to autograph my copy for me. Hey Brakker - maybe you can even sign my copy. There was a guy in it playing the guitar at one of the parties that kind of reminded me of you....... spin

cheers,

Northern Lights

Nope. That wasn't me. It could have been if I had any musical talent, but I don't. (Wish I did.) I thought about trying to start my acting career by applying for a "town drunk" role but there was just too much competition.

Weather beautiful here...... Nice diving and snorkeling, etc. Last Saturday the Rotary Club had their annual Barracuda Bonanza, with some big prizes for the best catches. Bonnie and I went out to help with a group of school children on one of the Reef Divers' boats. No prize winners in our group but we all had a blast!

Definitely not my bag. Tried goosing a ghost once and got a handful of sheet.... haven't been interested in the supernatural since. Wink
