Whoa! Wait a minute. There aren't any real sea serpents, are there? Maybe it's a whale egg..... or not. I think it's a little rough textured to be an egg, but I don't know much about large marine eggs. Perhaps you do. This object was found off the north shore of the Brac at a depth of less than 50 feet, near Radar Reef. I brought it home and put it on the porch until I decided what to do with it. Well... you didn't expect me to bring it inside, did you? Some kind of alien creature might hatch out! You've seen those scifi movies haven't you? I'm not afraid, of course... just cautious. Whatever it is, It's 23 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 inches in diameter. As you can see, it has rounded ends and no stem scar visible. Approximate weight is ten pounds. If you know what it is please let me know by posting here on CAG.

Yikes--do you think it was something that actually originated in the ocean--or something that might have been tossed there?

Shelly :-)

Brakker,

Hmmm. I expect that you'll be assimilated soon!

Seriously, I've never seen anything like that. Is it spongy, woody, or what?

DS

brakker1,

Not sure if it is natural or manmade, or if it is land or marine animal, plant or mineral.

However, from the dimensions, it sounds like it is bigger than a breadbox! Laughing

Don't see any fuses, and you don't mention any ticking, so that's a good thing! Wink

If not natural, then a wild guess would be a marine fender/boat dock bumper with some ocean aging/marine growth.

If natural, looks like some kind of sponge?

If you woke up this morning without problems, then I guess it is not an alien or a left over pod from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"! rolllaugh

If you provide more details, or if you find out what it is, let us know!

Thanks for the pictures and laughs. ThumbsUp

jpep

Hello! Sorry to take so long in getting back to the forum with this follow-up, but this sort of thing takes time. We don't want to rush the investigation do we? As you will see from the video, it is too hard to be any kind of boat fender. Ditto for being a sponge. Being unable to get any meaningful information from friends, relatives and other local nondescripts, I went to the Cayman Brac Marine Underwater Extraterrestial Artifacts Technology Division and had them give it the once-over. After extensive examination and exhaustive tests it turns out that they they were as much at sea on this as I! They were kind enough to lend me one of their solid state non-electronic field resonators.... considerably smaller than they use in their laboratory.... which I used in making the following video. Just click on the picture. I hope you have a headset with good volume.... The audio is lousy.

(Shelly, I love it when you talk dirty.)

hmmm--very interesting

How much does it weigh? My husband thinks you're spoofing us, but I'm sure it's on the up and up.

No, Shelly.... the item itself is no spoof. I actually did find it resting in the sand in one of the channels (part of the spur and groove system) that run out around the island. This particular spot was out from the Kirkconnell Street ramp (AKA known as the Radar Reef entry). It was out towards Atlantis but is certainly not a part of Atlantis. It was lying flat on the sand..... almost on top, like it hadn't been there for a long period of time, but covered with a brownish/greenish algae and I wasn't sure I wanted to touch it or not, but curiosity got the better of me and I brought it back. It seemed to be heavier when I first retrieved it than it is now.... about 10 pounds cleaned off. I did lay it on a little thick about what it might be and the assistance from the "Cayman Brac MUEATD", but truthfully I haven't a clue as to what it is or its origin or even what it's composed of. At first glance it looks like wood but the "grain" doesn't seem right and it doesn't really sound like wood when tapped on..... doesn't sound like metal, either. Maybe someday some knowledgeable person will come along with all the answers. If that ever happens I will make a follow-up post. Note to jpep and DS: If I get assimilated, forget the follow-up post.

I can hardly wait until you find a definitive answer! I imagine there are all kinds of interesting things that can be picked up in the ocean.

Hi Brakker,

How about this for a guess......could it be a piece of a coconut palm that has been tumbled around by the ocean for a few years? I was surprised at how heavy those things are when we righted one that was partially knocked over by Paloma. It's fun to try and think up the possibilities, although I likely won't come up with anything as creative as sea serpent egg. Loved your video!

cheers,

Northern Lights

No. When we moved into our new house I brought it along. It now rests in an old earthenware crock on the front porch, overlooking the sea. (Note to DS and jpep..... It shows no signs of hatching.) If we ever DO identify it I will post the information on CAG.

Water temp has definitely become bearable. Bonnie and I went out to
greenhouse reef yesterday. Nice trip!

Brakker,

I wonder what the incubation period is for a T-Rex?

brakker1,

Since it hasn't hatched ... yet... then we know you have not been assimilated by the Body Snatchers! Therefore, I think we can rule out that it is not an alien pod, as they had short incubation periods in both the original and remake of the movie! Laughing

Still think it is some kind of hardened boat bumper/fender... or perhaps a semi-petrified zucchini?

Since it is on the porch in the new house, have you noticed whether any insects have been attracted to it?

We'll stay tuned! spin

Nope. The insects have no interest. And even though it is in plain view of the sea, no sea creatures have tried to re-claim it....... that I know of. Rolling Eyes
