Hi, me again, with a few more questions ...
We made our decision and made reservations at the Treasure Island condos. From what I understand from reading all over this board, we can grab a taxi from the airport to the condos. Besides renting a car, is there any other way we can get to the condos from the airport?
For the week we are there, we plan on relaxing on the beach, getting in the water from time to time and having a few cold drinks. We are also excited about the turtle farm and Stingray City. The little lady is excited about the shopping. I may take a fishing trip while she does that. Smile Any other suggestions on what we should do?
I have been all over Mexico over the years and one thing that I am always leary of are the timeshare salespeople. They trick tourists into all sorts of things. Is there anything like that at GC? Do we need to be 'on guard' as we get off of the plane, get to our taxi, then get to our resort?
What is within walking distance from the Treasure Island condos? Is there a detailed map somewhere that shows everything within the area? We will do some of our own cooking, but will venture out for meals, shopping, etc.
Does anyone have any recent experience at the Treasure Island condos? If so, how was your stay? Anything we should be aware of?

Thanks

Hi pokefan..... I'll take a stab at some of your questions..... I would take a taxi to TI. The rates are set by the government so you won't get gouged, I think it was like $20 bucks or so the last time we taxied to that area, it was a mini-van so lots of room for everyone, and luggage. If you decide to rent a car for a couple days, walk up West Bay to the Andy's location.

You have a good plan, grab your Activity Guide at the airport and take advantage of the specials and discounts, everything you want to do is covered, Sotos for SRC, Oh Boy for fishing, shopping discounts. Use the discount coupons to buy your liquor, you're all set!

Has never happened to me in 10 years visiting the island, and I've stayed at timeshare resorts. Maybe out east at The Reef or Morritts they may pressure sales, but you're miles away from there.

Everything!!.. the TI condos are the best location on the island in my opinion. You can walk to George Town, up to Coconut Joes, shops, many other restaurants and shopping centers. Look at the CAG maps right here: http://www.caymanactivityguide.com/Maps.htm

I've not stayed there but friends of ours do every year.... We knocked back many Caybrews at Billy Bones pool bar.... Great Place, If I ever buy in Cayman, TI would be my first choice!!! Have Fun!!!

Hi, PokeFan. I, too, am a Poke fan. I got to go to the games in Dayton.

We are about to leave for TI. Our last trip was 2 years ago, but we love it enough to return! The snorkeling is great right out front. We get a car, because we love snorkeling all over the island, too.

If you go to the main CAG site (not the forums), there is a link to maps. They're around here somewhere, too. I'm sure one of the mods can hook you up with a link.

Enjoy!

Thank you haltom, for consistently being so helpful. Very Happy

HERE is our main map page, where you can click on any land area for enlarged views or anywhere on the water for dive and snorkel sites.

Have a wonderful vacation!

In regard to the timeshare "pressure" question...

In four trips, we've only experienced a timeshare pitch once, and it was late in the evening, when we were walking back to the Marriott from the Wharf restaurant....I believe we wre somewhere between Treasure Island and the Marriott, and the guy had a little stand set up with an umbrella.

We politely told him we weren't interested, and he was okay with letting us go after a few more requests to come to the presentation. We've NEVER seen the type of timeshare hassle that you see in Mexico in Cayman....and I've experienced the Puerto Vallarta airport hassle, as well as the beach timeshare folks in Nueva Vallarta, so I know what you're looking to avoid. As far as that goes, Cayman is not a concern. Smile

The only timeshare we ever stayed at was the Reef in the east side, a few years ago, and I can say for an absolute fact that they do try and push timeshares down your throat. They have some kind of "orientation" meeting, where they try and sell you their marked up activites and other things...... and of course the timeshare presentations! There are also a lot of timeshare fanatics that hang out there (my guess is some of them are paid or get discounts for pusing timeshares on new arrivals) and all they talk about is how great it is to own a timeshare there, or next door at some other second rate resort.

My wife and I love this board and have used it extensively in planning our vacations. We've saved a lot of cash, especially now at a time when we can really use the savings. I don't post much but the least I can do is share what I learned from first hand experience.

I am also glad to see the Reef no longer listed with Activity Guide, which only makes this site all the more credible in my opinion. We did get a great discount from Treasure Island, which looks a lot more like a resort than the Reef, even though it's a CONDO! Smile

Thanks to everyone for making so much information and savings available. This website really is the most incredible place I've ever seen for anywhere we've ever visited. clapping

JohnM,

We're glad you've found the site helpful. It's always great to hear how the CAG has enhanced Cayman Islands visitors' vacations by pointing. clapping

We'd love to have you share with us what you found helpful here and what you liked best about your visits.

We've never done timeshares either. Some like them, but we don't like to be tied down to a specific time and island.

DS

pokefan_72,

I think you'll be very happy with Treasure Island Condos and its location....there are many shops and restaurants within walking distance, but I would still urge you to rent a car for at least a few days, so that you can get around and see all parts of the island.

If you really want to walk, you could even walk into Georgetown without too much trouble, where there are LOTS of shops and more restaurants. You'll be fairly close to Kirk's Supermarket, but I wouldn't want to walk it loaded down with groceries. (You can tell we always rent a car for the whole time).

You asked about other ideas of things to do. I would recommend a visit to St. Pedro's Castle and if you do go, to not miss the excellent multi-media show that they have there. You will learn a lot about Cayman history and its people.....it's very nice. I would also recommend taking the Atlantis submarine....you can board it in Georgetown. It doesn't sound like you are divers, so this would be a way that you could see the wonders of the deep in nice air-conditioned comfort. They go down 100 ft and you'll see wonderful coral formations and lots of fish. There's a discount coupon for this in the Activity Guide. I think this is a must-do for all who don't dive but want to see what we divers all see down there!

Have a great trip!

Char
