Howdy folks! Just planning an upcoming trip to GC, and wanted to know how long it will take to drive from 7 mile to Rum Point. Also, does anyone think it's worth the trip all the way up there? If worth it, would it be better to rent a car or try to catch a taxi? Thanks for the help, look forward to hearing from you soon! Thanks!

hi JDH1865

It takes about an hour. Definitely rent a car. A cab would be very expensive----you can stop at the Botanic Garden and Pedro's castle on the way and make a big day of it. Maybe do the Botanic Garden in the morning on the way--lunch at Rum Point and then on the way back go to Pedro St. James which is near Boddentown. Joe has a nice post called Go East

Click here for Go East info

It's so different from Seven Mile Beach

JDH1865,

I second the "rent a car" advice. You can make a day trip of it and see some of the cultural and touristy things on the way, as well as being able to make your own schedule and wander around as you want. Be sure to take the long route through East End either on the way to or from Rum Point.

Hi NSS!

Good news about the Rum Point restaurant. This is the fancier one, right? The bar/burger place in the sand has remained open if I remember. Any word on what will become of the late Driftwood property?

See ya,
DS

I checked out the "go east" post, we will definitely follow it for the day. I was thinking of taking the shortcut to rum point, but thanks to you, we won't miss all the great spots. I appreciate the help you two! I am looking at rental car rates as we speak! Cheers Smile

DS---What are you referring to about the fancier Rum Point restaurant? Does this refer to some other post? I haven't read anywhere about anything happening there since I was there last winter and saw them painting the place--plans were for a Feb. opening, but I know that didn't happen. It sure would be nice if that opened again,

Just a question. We've never been to Rum Point, but it is on my TO DO LIST, first thing. But when looking at the pics it doesn't look fancy...looks beachy. Am I right? Confused Would like to know before going. Smile

Rum Point is a beach, with trees, a high priced ($10/burger) snack bar, picnic tables, and can be very crowded when they bus in the cruise ships. Nothing fancy there except the prices. Personally, I prefer the kaibo area, just past Rum Point. No crowds, starfish on the beaches, most importantly, no bus loads of cruise puppies!

JKman,

How far is kaibo from R.P.? I've read that some have gone to starfish beach, same thing? Could you also do both on the same day?

Thanks Tracy!

Kaibo is 1.3 miles from Rum Point. The starfish are not at Kaibo, but at the end of the street going past Kaibo and the Pools of the Kai---at a place that was called Ivory Kai. Don't know if they've ripped that sign down yet.

That beach has nothing on it and is a property that is going to be developed, but nothing has started there yet. So get there before it's built up. Some people have complained about garbage on the beach--but it wasn't too bad when we were there last year. I saw someone camping there with a tent last year.

Actually they do bring in a boat of people periodically who have probably been to StingRay city for lunch at Kaibo----but as JKman says it is still a whole lot quieter than Rum Point.

Have fun

Shelly :-)

Well, based on my last 2 visits in less than so many years, Cayman Kai IS how Rum Point WAS, about 5 years ago, before they started bussing in the cruise shippers, before they started selling burgers for $10! Before a lot of things, guess they call it progress, before that, used to be you could take a book, stop and pick up a six with a pack of ice, lay back at Rum Point all day. The only sounds I remember from those days were the muffled screams of a few volleyball players. The last TWO times, the place was infested, and I don't exaggerate. I mean INFESTED, like between the little shack where they sell the $10 burgers, all the way to the beach and both directions from the end of the parking lot to whatever it is over on the right. So we are talking about the whole place. People nowhere more than 5 feet apart, and that is being generous. Many people from the bar outward, pushed and shoved in and out like herds of beef to the slaughter. I've never seen anything like it and never will again, packed up, went to Kaibo and the rest is history.

I know I could plan my entire vacation around when the cruise puppies are gonna get rounded up that a way, usually on a middle day, like a mon-fri, maybe not fri. But that's not the point... The point is, why SHOULD I???? Why should I, who am paying about $1,000 a day just to be there, with air, hotel, everything factored in. Why shoudl I have to plan my vacation time around a bunch of people who didn't pay more for their whole vacation than I did for those few hours of mine they ruined? That sounded worse than it should have, let me put it another way. When I am going to a top dollar destination, and let's face it, the Caymans are a top dollar destination, then why in the name of Mother God in Hell SHOULD I have to rearrange 1 minute of my time, let alone an ENTIRE DAY, to whenever it makes sense from the least cruise people perspective? Can anyone give me one good reason for that?

So I guess you can tell I get a little impassioned when I see one of my favorite places go up in smoke. Literally! The time BEFORE last, the straw before the straw that broke the camel's back, some stupid socks with hard shoes wearing sort pants idiot decided it would be a good idea to put his LIT CIGARETTE in the trash basket, loaded with GREASY PAPER AND PLASTIC! As anyone who's eaten there, they know how the food is served and how greasy it is. Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out that maybe, just maybe, putting a LIT cigarette in with all that combustible junk isn't such a good idea. But noooooooooooooooooooooooo. Toss it in, what the hey! We're on the next bus out in 10 minutes, so let the next bus load of idiots deal with it. Then a different idiot who had WAY too many drinks, spilled part of his ridiculously priced pina colada or some other fancy drink right on my wife's shirt! All I will say about that, is that moron is SOooooooooooooooooooo lucky that I had just gotten there and only started my beer. If he pulled that a couple hours later after I'd had a few beers, he'd be wearing that pina whatava all over his face, dripping down his short checkered pants, down the white socks, right onto his black hard heel shoes!

So that was that. The end of another era for me at Grand Cayman brings the beginning of a new one. I can not comment on Cayman Kai because they are not a CAG recommended place. But Joe, I'm telling you, if you go down there and compare the two places, I mean REALLY compare, like you did so well with the condos, like you did so well with the restaurants. Really look around and see what the different places are serving, how much they are charging, how much room you get between the tables, you know, those things you pride yourself on. Look at that, and then tell me and everyone else that Rum Point is the place to go. You always talk about credibility, get rid of Rum Point, their 3 times the going rate prices for second rate greasy food, and their crowded beyond any realistic level beach with drunken fools who don't give a hoot about the island pushing and shoving for their next $15 pina colada. Compare that........ Then go to the "Other" place. Look at their view, thier trees, their hammocks, their PRICES, their FOOD QUALITY, their QUIET RELAXED PEACE. Look at their beatutiful starfish near the beach, snorkel level water. Peace and quiet.

Please Joe, tell us. Which is better?

Yikes! Some pretty strong opinions about Rum Point.

What I find interesting is that to me that whole side of the island is like Cayman was 30 years ago. (I guess except for when Rum Point is busy)

We go over to Rum Point before the people arrive and it's beautiful over there. I walk over early in the morning and there is not a soul on the beach--granted that's pretty early in the day---but it is lovely over there then. Last year we were there when a lot of people arrived from a cruise ship, but they hardly got to sit down before it was time for them to depart. Our grandkids loved going over there.

We've had a few drinks over there, but haven't eaten anything. The grandkids, however, enjoyed the food over there too. (But luckily their parents paid for it)

When we first came to Cayman there was 1 cruise ship a week, and not that many flights onto the island either. Times have changed. When our kids were little and we stayed on 7MB, we used to go into town all the time, now we never go there. Don't like the crowds----so we just stay away and have found other ways to enjoy our days.

My husband was interested in finding a less developed island to try, but we just moved over to Kaibo, and that did the trick for us.

Just my thoughts on the subject

Shelly :-)

Hi Shelly,

If I remember right, there is the much-discussed (and cussed) beach bar (the 10/burger joint!) and then there was an indoor restaurant next to it. We never got to the indoor restaurant because I think it was way too much $$.

I'm hoping they put in a nicer restaurant than the beach bar but which is still affordable.

We still go to Rum Point due to nostalgia (we remember it from our 1985 honeymoon as a thatch hut-style bar with no crowds, deep sigh) but when it starts getting crowded it isn't enjoyable and it is kind of pricey.

DS

Hi DS

We did go to the inside restaurant a few times--that was when we were staying on SMB--we took the ferry over---lots of fun---and yes it was expensive but we did enjoy it.

We're heading back next week, so I'll see what's going on at the restaurant. I imagine with the economy what it is, if it hasn't opened yet, who knows when it will happen.

Speaking of the old thatch hut style bar with no crowds--I remember when our kids were little we used to drive over there once each vacation--it was a long drive---the kids got their shirley temples at the bar with little umbrellas in them. They had the grossest bathrooms there, and I always dreaded that part of the trip. They used to have fish in a pen in the water by the pier (not quite as grand as the current pier)too and didn't they have some birds in cages also?

Shelly :-)
