Hi All,

We are coming back to Grand Cayman! Yippee!

We were last there in April, 2006, and have not exactly kept up with happenings down there. But as we loved it so much, we booked a trip on a whim and we are headed back on New Year's Day.

So, for all the experts out there Very Happy , what suggestions do you have for a family of snorkeling, beach bums? We are staying again at The Reef (perfect for us and our 19 and 17 year old). We hit Stingray City last time, and will probably hit it again. What else do you suggest? What has changed that would be good to know?

Thank you in advance!

sdmac99 - It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your holiday and are returning again so soon.

There are so many spectacular attractions, activities, water sports and restaurants on Grand Cayman that the selection process can be overwhelming. The best place to start would be our Must Do List, which may help you by narrowing everything down to what we consider to be the very best after a thorough screening process.

Then read through the various topics with details, photos, reviews and (often) videos that interest you and add them to your personal Must Do list, using the button near the top of each topic . Then print the list before you leave and bring it with you as a reminder. Vacations go by so quickly that the more information and planning you can do beforehand, the less encumbrances you will endure during your stay, leaving more valuable vacation time for enjoying your favorite activities.

Please note that you are staying at a non-recommended resort and limit any specific resort experiences to a brief mention; both here during the planning stages and hopefully the trip report you will post when you return. Very Happy

Have a wonderful vacation.

We really enjoyed Stingray City for a second time and Boatswains for the first time during our trip over a week ago. Our last trip was in 2004 just two weeks before Ivan and we missed the turtle farm and botanical garden just because we were so busy. The turtle farm is completely redone and it's pretty darn cool. We got a 20% discount through Andy's so that was nice. Because of Hurricane Paloma we missed the botanical garden yet again. What a bummer! But otherwise we had a wonderful time snorkeling at Rum Point (where we stayed) and Cemetary Beach off SMB. Our first trip in '04 was at The Reef and we loved it - at the time we had my older teens with us too and they were a tad bored with the isolation out there. We didn't bring them with us this time because they're in college but I would imagine they would have liked the Rum Point area better. Anyhoo....we didn't do the Black Pearl skate/surf park but drove past and it was packed. My hubby and oldest daughter (12) looked very interested but we were on our way to someplace else. Don't forget The Lighthouse for a romantic dinner - the service, food, and presentation just blows my mind. We've never had a bad meal there and it's not all that far from the East End. My husband lusted after the jet-skis zipping around and I would imagine your boys would really enjoy that sort of adventure and freedom. We just about choked on the prices but didn't do any research so maybe you can find a deal. Otherwise, just relax and have a fabulous time. Some of the best entertainment is likely right out your front door - the ocean!

For anyone planning to rent a jet ski for more than a couple hours, you can rent a 2 person wave runner from Moore Marine and with your Activity Guide discount, you will actually spend less for a full day rental with them than a few hours at any beach resort.

sdmac99...CONGRATULATIONS...What a GREAT way to bring in the New Year...in paradise!

My suggestion is Rum Point.....for the beach and for snorkeling...and for eating!
You are going to have so much fun! I'd also do the Kayak tours from Kaibo....VERY easy, fun and different...you take a tour thru the Mangroves and learn all about their role in the lives of the fish on the island....it's their nursery! LOVE it! They've changed hands since I was last there, but believe there is still a coupon in CAG!

Celine

I've been on Cayman Kayak tours with Bob and then the next year with Tom. Both were great--

Shelly :-)

Of course! The kayaks! I should have mentioned that. Definitely look into those tours - they looked really neat. We were lucky enough to have a really nice kayak as part of our condo rental at Rum Point and it was a huge hit with my husband and daughters. They spent a lot of time kayaking in the huge lagoon behind the condo. Maybe come to Rum Point and rent a kayak and go to the lagoon and then - Starfish Beach over at the tip of where Kaibo is located. It's a unique experience to say the least.

Thank you everyone for your input. Very Happy

I just need to clarify that Cayman Kayaks does not offer departures from Rum Point; they depart from Cayman Kai, which is about 2 miles past Rum Point, easily located by following the signs and using the maps in Activity Guide.

If kayak rental is available at Rum Point, it would probably cost about the same as Cayman Kayaks tours and you would simply be paddling around by yourself in a shallow lagoon at the busiest beach in the Cayman Islands. There could obviously be no comparison between that and the remote, secluded, guided, educational tours offered by Cayman Kayak's eco tour adventures.

Anyone fortunate enough to visit during periods of calm northern seas combined with moonless nights can also take their bioluminescent tour, which is one of the most intriguing and memorable adventures you will ever experience. Simply give Cayman Kayak's a call when you arrive and ask if they are planning any such tours during your stay.

Be sure to use the coupon in Activity Guide and book direct for the best prices. Wink

tracya

I don't know where it is on this site, but I found it by googling it. At the top of the page on the left it says listen live--or something like that. click on that and wait for it to connect and to buffer.. It takes a little while

Good Luck

Shelly :-)
