I will be staying on at Aquay Bay on the North side of 7 Mile Beach, and I would like to take a morning hike on the Mastic Trail. Is there any morning rush hour I should avoid? How long does it take to drive to the Mastic Trail from Aqua Bay?

Hi DanS1,

Probably a good idea to do a hike in the morning, but I think you will also encounter quite a bit of traffic heading down towards Georgetown in the morning hours....especially between 7 and 9 (?). However, there is a new road now, and I think that will really help you.......check it out on our map of 7 Mile Beach...... You will be staying even further north than this map shows, but as soon as you can cut over to the new road, I would do it. Then, you will need to wind your way to the South Side (without going through Georgetown) and head towards the Frank Sound Road. I think most of the traffic will be headed in the opposite way while you are heading East. If you look at this map of Grand Cayman from the Activity Guide, you'll see that the start of the Mastic Trail is off of the Frank Sound Road, just south of the entrance to the Botanical Gardens. I think that's where it starts, although I've never done the hike myself.

To answer your real question as far as how long it will take to drive there in the morning, I guess I would plan on at least 45 minutes from where you are staying.

The southern trail head is off Mastic Road. Turn left right past the Frank Sound Fire Station.
Depending on when you are going to the island, the lower part of the trail can be under water. Call the National Trust office to check

You can also access the Trail from North Side. Take Further Road (right next to the house named "Not For Sale" and follow it up the hill.

I've been studying this amazing site religiously for the past weeks, preparing for my first trip to the Cayman Islands. So I am obviously no expert on this, or anything else, but I did read a wonderful topic about the mastic trail. It looks like a beautiful place for a hike, maybe on the way to the botanic park. I have them both on my ever-growing must do list! Jump

Anyways, the topic is here - MASTIC TRAIL TOPIC with beautiful pictures, directions, and everything. rose

My wife and I took the guided tour/hike of the trail, which was great. The guide expalined a great many thing to us and pointed out things that we definitely would have missed. Although I can't remember the cost, it was a bit pricey, but the proceeds do go to a good cause as far as I know.

Unless you are an experienced hiker, I would recommend the tour for it's informational aspect as well as the fact that you will come out of the woods at the end! (Getting lost is a possibility...) You hike from the south end to the north end and then get a ride back to your car in a van. All in all, a good experience.

Contact the National Trust for more information.

Glad to hear from someone who took the tour---I'm definitely going to have to do it this year! Seems like I say that every year---but maybe this will be the one! We once had a private tour in the early days of the Botanic Garden and it was wonderful. (It cost $2 each and my girlfriend and I were the only ones on the tour)

Shelly :-)

Unfortunately, the tour costs ALOT more than $2... still worth it, though.
