I have GPS on both my portable Magellan and my iPhone, do either of these devices work on Grand Cayman Island? I know it is an island and I probably won't get lost but just the same, it would be nice to know that it was available if needed. Is it possible to rent a portable GPS unit for our rental car?

Unless you can get maps for your devices, GPS will be pretty ineffective on the island. I can't (and won't) speak for the car rental agencies, but more than likely, they probably won't have GPS options for their rentals.

I would check with Economy: Economy's Thread or Andy's: Andy's Thread to see if they offer it in any of their vehicles.

You might also want to check with Magellan to see if international maps are available. And if so, which countries are covered

Also, check out google earth ahead of time and get a feel for how the island is laid out and where things are in relation to other places.

We went geocaching when we were there last year with our portables and had no problems.

Lisa,
We're geocaching there this year! I just started this little hobby last November. I can't wait to do it on GC. It's great because I know the island pretty well so finding the caches should be easy (hopefully).

We are coming down for 10 days in December, staying at the Islands Club on seven mile beach. Do any GPS units work in the caymans? I'd love to bring my TomTom and have the wanted destinations programmed before hand; however, I cannnot find a map for GC for sale on their site. Anyone have any info on using a GPS while on GC?
Thanks in advance
Rick

My Garmin worked like a charm when we were down in November. The newest maps from Garmin include Grand Cayman.

Dang-nab it, that means our not-so-secret-but-still-off-the-beaten-path paradise has made the big-time! Brace yourself for the crowds...!

Good to see you Bill. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

I knew Andy's rented GPS's by the day but great to know that the new Garmin updates include Grand Cayman. We didn't have any trouble getting around last year but this will make it easier. And vacation and easy go hand in hand.

Amen to that! GPS sure could be helpful when you get to the west Bay area. It is like a maze if you're unfamiliar.
