Hello,

I will be in the Cayman Islands the week of Dec. 21-27. I live on the coast of North Carolina and I like to make jewelry from beach glass and shark's teeth. Where is the best place to find them? Also, where is the best place to look for shells?

Thank you,

Becky

Becky,

I always find a TON of beach glass on SMB just up a little from the Hyatt (toward the Marriott). Cemetery Beach and Smith's Cove are also good spots. I'm looking at a little jar of it on my desk right now. Smile

As for shells, most that I have found are small, since the reef tends to stop a lot of what would otherwise roll in. I did find a really nice shell of undetermined name a couple of years ago...need to get that identified....

As for shark's teeth - I've never found one of those.

Hope this helps.

Jen

My wife finds all kinds of tiny perfect shells every year, and once she did find a shark's tooth!

Happy to learn you can bring shells back......another island we've visited they frown on that and any type of broken coral that washes up is prohibited.......is it the same in GC? Guess I don't understand why you cannot bring back broken pieces of coral. I am not familiar with beach glass, can someone fill me in please?

knees,

Beach glass is just broken pieces of glass that have been rolled around in the ocean with all the rocks, shells, etc. I like the pieces that show the most wear. They are nice and cloudy. We found lots of pieces at Cemetery Beach. We even made a special trip just to find more pieces. If you snorkel along the water's edge you can find lots. If you're comfortable diving down to get the ones just out of your reach, you will do well! We found some at the other spots mentioned, but this was by far the best place we found.

Also, my father-in-law found what seems to be a dried up seahorse there. It looks like the ones you might find in a bag of shells. Has anyone else ever found this??

Never seen a seahorse. But have gotten sand dollars --which I thought was a treasure!

Where are the best beaches for picking up beach glass? Had good luck 1 year by the Turtle Nest Inn. Heard there was a good site near Rum Point.

Any ideas?

I read this thread and now I'm more interested than ever in beach glass. Never really thought about it before, but having read through this thread, I can see its appeal.

I will be making my 2nd trip to the Caymans in January of next year (after a 12 year absense) with my lovely wife (her first trip) and this would be a GREAT way for her to get some mermories and have something to bring back and put on display. Smile

Here is a beach glass sign I made from North Side collected glass.

Although the sign background looks the same as the wall, it's actually made with sand from our beach!
