Yes. When you get there change your settings to make Cable and Wireless your provider. That will give you the best rates. Wink

Has anyone had experience with using calling cards purchased in the US while on Grand Cayman? If so, how do the rates "translate". i.e. how much time would I get calling on a 100 minute card. I don't know much about them (obviously) but I will need to make calls to the US concerning the refurbishing of my Dad's place. (I have a T-Mobile cell phone and their service stinks, so I wouldn't want to trust it on the island.) Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Be very careful. Last May when we were there my father in law passed away in the states. Needless to say we had to make a ton of calls to get home and were making arrangements long distance. We used the land line from our room as well as our cell phone. The calls from the room were fairly reasonable, about $200. Our cell bill was over $800! This was with Cingular. This last trip we never even turned on the cell, just kept it in cases of emergency. I had two calls that went to my voice mail and they charged us $25. Cingular says that half of the charges were from the local provider for roaming charges. The thing is, we called Cingular before we left and they said they didn't even have service in Cayman......We are looking for a new cell phone company. tantrum

I think you can switch to Cable and Wireless when you are here regardless of what provider you are using. That should be the cheapest way since they control the lines and everyone else has to go through them. AT&T has recently been awarded the rights to provide overseas service from the Cayman Islands, but for the time being they are still going through Cable and Wireless' equipment.

I think you have to buy them there. Please let us know when you get back if that is the case.

Verizon utilizes CDMA technology for their phones, as opposed to most US carriers which use GSM. GSM is used all around the world. On our last visit, my Verizon phone received no reception while my brother's GSM phone from Cingular had full signal. I am almost positive cable and wireless use GSM only...

Just worth looking in to if you really need the service!

Thanks adawg.

Another option would be to rent a cell phone from Cable and Wireless when you arrive. They offer weekly rentals at their store in West Shore Centre. wink

Does anyone have a email address or phone number for Cable and Wireless? I would want to find out what they charge per minute for calls to the states. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me if a cell phone from Bermuda will work in Cayman. I am talking just about the instrument, not a provider. I will be moving to Cayman soon and would prefer to buy the cell phone instrument from Bermuda as we have some special offers going on here. I will use the services of cable & Wireless or Digicel (please guide me which is better, in terms of long distance calls to other than USA, Canada and UK - rest of the world). Does anyone know if the cell phones use the same frequency in Bermuda and Cayman and if I can use the phone without any problems in Cayman.

Thanks.

They should work anywhere if you have roaming.
