Does anyone have any experience diving with children as young as 10 in Cayman? My daughter would like to try diving while we are visinting in March. I don't think I have enough time to sign her up for a junior certification course but was wondering if resort courses are offered to young children?

Geoff,

Since Neptune's Divers provides PADI training at various levels, you should email Casey and ask if they will provide the PADI Discover Scuba Diving class to your daughter. According to PADI, the minimum age for Discover Scuba is 10 years old.

If you email Casey this morning I bet you will have an answer when she returns from the morning two-tank dive.

You may also want to inquire by email to our other recommneded dive operators.

John

Most any dive operator will offer Discover Scuba Diving to 10 year olds. It is the minimum age and there are just a few additional restrictions the dive operator must abide by.

In any DSD course with a child age 10 or 11 there is a maximum of 2 children of those ages allowed. Overall supervision ratio of 4 students to 1 instructor remains. The operator should have a separate chat with the student and a parent about the student's responsibilities and instructor's expectations for the class.

While the waters in Cayman are warm as compared to other destinations, it can be cool enough to pose problems for small kids. Many dive shops do not have wetsuits that fit children properly. In February and March when the water is at its coldest many small kids may be uncomfortably cold without a properly fitting wetsuit.

Drew,
Thanks for the reminder about the wetsuit. I am one of those individuals who rarely gets cold when diving in Cayman waters so the reminder that a little one may need exposure protection is welcome! Thanks.
