I am staying on the North Side of the island and was wondering where to go for diving. This will be my first trip to GC. I don't usually go very deep (mostly stay around 40-50 feet level). I hear that Neptune Divers are very good, but it sounds like they are only picking up people along 7 mile beach. For me that will be a long trip. Is there anyone who picks up divers from the North side or around Rum Point area? Also, I came across Ocean Frontiers, but they mostly dive east. I heard that most of the best diving was in the West/North West?

Hi mahogany123 -

If you want to dive at 40-50 ft. depths you don't need to spend $90 - $120 for boat dives; you can do that from shore for about $10/fill. Many of Grand Cayman's best shore dives are in the Northside area. Near Frank Sound Road you will find several little unpaved roads leading to the ocean and superlative diving at precisely those depths. Just be very careful about your entry/exit, as the shoreline is somewhat sharp and slippery. If you are not positive you can comfortably enter and exit the ocean given the prevailing sea conditions, don't try! There is always another day.

You could also plan a day or two to see the other side of the island and incorporate your diving into the morning hours, leaving afternoons and evenings free for things like Boatswain's Beach, Cracked Conch (one of the best shore dives on the entire island); Pappagallo and all the other wonderful sights, activities and restaurants in the Seven Mile Beach area.

If your schedule permits, try to plan your Seven Mile Beach/George Town days on days when there are little or no cruise ships in: Typically, Tuesday - Thursday are the busiest cruise ship days. You can always check our cruise ship calendar link in our Making the Most of One Day Forum.

Have a great vacation!

mahogany123,

Joe's right about the Cracked Conch/Turtle Reef shore dive being great. Mrs DS and I have done it several times, and brother DS and I have done it as a night dive. It is really cool, and easy to navigate.

And yes, try to avoid days when there are too many cruise ships in town!

Hey Joe, here's another idea to cause you work and keep you out of the bingo halls. How about a cruise ship schedule page on the website? Probably a link to the port authority page would suffice!

DS
