PostPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2007 10:20 am    Post subject: West End Dive Operation Recommendations

We are planning our dive trip to Grand Cayman for next June or early July, staying (complimentary) at the Grand Caymanian resort on the west end. A dive package is not included, so I am seeking recommendations for the best dive operations to book a 6-day dive package -- 2-tank dives, great DMs, no cattle boats, etc., etc.

Suggestions?? Thanks!

Steve

RC --

Thanks! This link is really helpful. I did some Google searching yesterday after I posted my message, and independently determined that Neptune's was probably the kind of dive operation that I was looking for. You have confirmed that! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Steve

Steve Jorgensen,

Welcome back, hope all is well.

I have dived with Keith & Casey from Neptune's in 10/05, 7/06 and 3/07. They run a great operation and provide personalized service, with 8 divers maximum. They will provide free pick up/drop off at your hotel/condo in Georgetown/SMB. Now that they have 2 boats, depending on the conditions, you can dive North, West or South. Being you will be staying at the Grand Caymanian, you'll be pretty close to Public Beach where they moor one of the boats.

Not only are Keith & Casey great divers, but they are fantastic people.

Just drop Casey an email and she'll get back to you quickly. Don't forget to ask for your CAG discount.

Divinpaul, CaptainJack, Grateful Diver & I dove with them in 3/07 and had a blast. I heartily recommend Neptune's and I'm sure they would also. Check the Diving and Trip Report topics for all the glowing reviews and pictures.

So how are you doing with the Sealife DC500?

John

Hey, John --

You remember me! I am impressed. The Sealife DC500 has worked really well for me. I got the strobe, which sometimes works the way I want it and sometimes not! Also bought the wide angle lens, which I use routinely. I have gotten some really good photos with this camera -- just by luck, I am certain, as I continue to learn. My first real experience with it was in Bonaire in December and then on the Explorer II (Turks and Caicos) in February, where it was definitely the smallest piece of artillery on the boat. Man --you should have seen some of those cameras! I was the "point-and-shoot" guy, but I tell you -- it did OK (in my humble opinion). Sometimes I get a real green backwash, but then the next shot is true blue -- and I have no idea why. None of the "experts" on the Explorer II live-aboard seemed to have the knowledge to help me with it, as they are light years beyond with their high-tech stuff! We thought it might be something called the "white balance," which we attempted to set manually. Did it help? Maybe! Maybe not!

Dove the Bloody Bay Wall in Little Cayman this past July, at Pirate's Point Resort, and the camera worked like a champ.

If I had any clue how to attach photos on this message board, I would show you a couple of my favorite shots.

Will keep Neptune's in our sights.

Good to hear from you!

Just chiming in with my 2 cents about Keith and Casey at Neptune's. You really can't go wrong with them. You'll definitely have a great time. Back in March, she even fulfilled a dive site request we had e-mailed to her 2 weeks before. Amazing! Just tell her that the CAG Fearless Foursome sent ya!!

Steve,

Last of the CAG Fearless Foursome chiming in here. Absolutely have to agree with Jpep, Captain Jack and divnpaul on Neptunes. I have been travelling to Cayman for eight years and until I dove with Neptunes this past spring, I hadn't found a dive operator that made me feel like I wouldn't dive with anyone else. Neptunes is now that diver operator for me! I have dove with Ocean Frontier's and enjoyed the service and the dive sites on the east end but we stay on 7MB and that's just too far to drive every morning. Also, say hi to Keith and Casey if you choose to dive with Neptunes.

P.S. Here's another photo from the CAG Fearless Foursome. This was a really cool dive in that we were on a dive site on the west end with Keith - Casey had another group moored at a site nearby. We met up underwater and here's Casey posing with Captain Jack, divnpaul and myself (mask half full of water). I can't remember if jpep took the photo or missed this dive??

Thanks you "fearless" people. Your lack of fear clearly shows in the photos! Mad

I have duly noted that Neptune's is THE place, and will definitely book with them once we have established whether or not we will be staying on 7MB. Thanks to ALL.

Steve

Very good. I patched in the message I had intended to send to you privately below. Just didn't want to bug the others on THIS thread with this message, which was really aimed at you.

Just wanted to direct you to an exchange of messages, begun by an inquiry from someone about inexpensive underwater cameras. I think they settled on a $40 disposable.

In any event, I posted some of my photos using the SeaLife DC500 that you and others recommended. It is in the Photography section of the Cayman Activity Guide Message Board, under the topic titled "Underwater Cameras," posted by Rodnsue. Just in case the following link does not work for you. Thought of you when I posted these, and thanking you once again for your sage advice. I have photos on both pages of the thread. Thought you would be interested.....

'Aye.

Steve,

Thanks for the heads up. BTW, those are some great shots you took!

ThumbsUp

Glad you like the camera. I agree that the DC500 is fine for novice photographers like us. Perhaps I too may someday decide to upgrade to a digital SLR. But until then, I'm just a diver that likes to take u/w pictures, and by no means and u/w photographer! Wink

Look forward to more of your shots when you dive with Keith & Casey from Neptune's... you will really enjoy diving with them. Smile

Thanks again,

John
