Snorkelkitty -
We stayed at the reef about 6 years ago and really enjoyed it! We have always stayed on 7 Mile Beach but 6 yrs ago (shortly after Hurricane Ivan) the Reef was one of only a handful of places that was open for business as the rest of the island was dealing with the massive clean-up from the storm. The Reef opened earlier than other resorts and I attribute this to the dedication and hard work of their staff (not to mention some help from overseas investors). The entire staff were great and the resort was pristine.
Because the East End of the island is the less developed you may want to consider renting a car. If you have kids with you, check out the Pirate's Caves. There is a valuable coupon in the Activity Guide. The Caves are located in Bodden Town (close to the Reef). There is a nature/cultural tour on the grounds with a small petting zoo. The real attraction for the kids is going down into the Caves. We have been told that while these Caves served as treasure hiding grinds for the pirates and rum runners that used to sail these waters the Caves have also served as a refuge for islanders during storms in the past. Here's some pictures of my kids at the Caves:

Another great thing to do on the East End is to head over to Rum Point and Kaibo for a day. Rum Point is extremely relaxing with a nice shaded beach area. Kaibo is also nice and great place to spot Sea Stars (starfish).
For great dining near the Reef check out Portofino's (great brunch) and the Lighthouse.
For good snorkeling near the Reef start out by the dock at Morrits resort next door and if the conditions allow consider swimming out to the Barrier Reef just off shore (ask about taking some sort of snorkel flag with you as there can be a lot of boat traffic out there). This swim out to the Barrier Reef is only for stronger swimmers comfortable snorkeling far from shore!
It looks like we will be in Cayman when you are. We usually stop by the Reef for a quick visit on our way home from Rum Point. The kids (while they were only 5 and 3 at the time still remember the great pools there and always want to go back for quick visit. Enjoy your trip!
