I'm almost embarrassed to ask such global questions but here goes. My sister and I are taking our first trip together to Grand Cayman in September. It's really important that this trip be successful as we are attempting to mend a distant relationship. We both want to stay at a place that is quiet, on the beach yet close enough to groceries and some shopping. Snorkeling is a priority. Which part of the island sounds like us? I just need some directions to explore. Can anyone help? Linda

Welcome ruhamah22 - Condos are quieter than resorts so that narrows it down a little. The north end of Seven Mile Beach is the most quiet but the snorkeling is a little better on the south end. Depending on your priorities, use our for the best rates and select Grandview, Treasure Island, Discovery Point and Anchorage.

This would be a good topic for you to read.

Thank you so much for responding. I booked a week at Turtle Nest Inn for September 15-22. Are all the beaches public? What is the currency and best way to exchange? How will the weather be in September? Is Bodden Town quaint? Are there grocery stores nearby? Are the locals friendly towards Americans? Anywhere to rent a horse for the week? I think you can tell I have a ton of questions. Thank you so VERY MUCH for your help!!, Linda

Thank you so much for responding.

No Problem. That's why we're here. Very Happy

I booked a week at Turtle Nest Inn for September 15-22.

Good choice. I didn't suggest it to you because it did not meet all of your criteria but I am sure you will love it.

Are all the beaches public?

Yes.

What is the currency and best way to exchange?

CI$1 = US$0.80

Whatever is most convenient for you.

How will the weather be in September?

Highs in the high 80s to mid 90s; humidity 90%; possible heavy brief isolated showers but mostly sunny, barring any disturbances.

Is Bodden Town quaint?

Bodden Town is the first capitol of the Cayman Islands and has maintained much of its inherent charm and architecture.

Are there grocery stores nearby?

No. This was the main reason I did not recommend this property to you. You will definitely need to rent a vehicle. See our Transportation forum for discounts at Andy's and Economy.

Are the locals friendly towards Americans?

Locals and residents are friendly and accommodating to visitors from all countries. That is one of the many attractions of the Cayman Islands.

Anywhere to rent a horse for the week?

I doubt it but you should definitely consider a Pampered Ponies swim the horse beach ride. You will find information, photos, videos, etc. about that, Stingray City and many other must do activities and restaurants in our forum.

Have a wonderful vacation!

Hey Linda .... looks like you are getting some great answers to your questions... that's what we are here for, so ask away...... but I have to ask... what do you intend to do with a horse for the entire week? I've been to Cayman numerous times and have yet to see any horses around town, not to mention hitchin' posts or waterin' troughs .....

I'm not trying to be funny, I've just never heard of someone wanting to rent a horse for a week on an Caribbean island ......

... if you do get a horse for the week, what do you do about the "left over" problems.... you know, when the horse.... kinda, LET'S GO, in the middle of the street in George Town??? ... Do you take a bag and a shovel??

Good luck in your search ....

When I was in Provo I found a person who let me ride for the whole week. I mucked the stall, brushed him etc. It was magical the way he loved swimming in the ocean. Any chance of this happenning on your island?

Thank you so much Jack and Joe, The horse I had in Provo belonged to a man just 2 blocks from the beach so I rode the beach and swam every day. I used to own horses so when this opportunity came along I was in HEAVEN. Maybe I should ask Alain at Turtle Nest. Our rental car comes with the apartment so getting to groceries shouldn't be a problem. I heard there were a couple small restaurants in Bodden Town but I'm confused when reading the Activity Guide restaurant section as to which may be close. Thanks again...CAN'T WAIT!!!!!...Linda

The Lighthouse restaurant would be near you. Portofino is on East End which wouldn't be that far either.

You could go into town too. It's not that far from Boddentown. You'll find a lot more traffic going into town--hardly any going to the Lighthouse or Portofino.

Shelly :-)
