Welcome to the forum dlgauvain Smile ,

I am a long time owner of a timeshare at Plantation Village, so I can answer any specific questions that you might have. I will tell you that it did indeed reopen on July 1st, and so everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) will be brand new. They have done a marvelous job of renovations and were simply held up waiting for the insurance settlement and construction supplies, just like everyone else on the island trying to recover post-Ivan.

Spend some time reading through all the posts of the various forums here and you'll learn a lot. One thing that I can tell you about Cayman compared to many other Caribbean islands is that it is very clean, very safe and the diving and snorkeling are spectacular.

Activate your trip countdown when you have a chance, so we can look forward to your trip right along with you!

Welcome to the forum, katiemadonna Smile ,

No apologies needed......I'll just combine the two threads, since they are both on the same place.

The reason that you haven't seen any posts here on Platantion Village is because they have only been open for the last few weeks, post-Hurricane Ivan. This Message Board didn't begin until post-Ivan.

Well, the beach is just fine, in my opinion. Others will tell you that it's "rocky". Sure, it's not powdery soft sand like you find at the resorts and hotels much further north on 7 Mile Beach. The sand is a bit coarser and the entry into the water for wading and such is a bit difficult. The reason for all of this is because there are some reefs right out in front that stretch from Treasure Island Condos, which is just to the south, up till about the Marriott Beach Resort, just to the North. So, there is great snorkling. Easy entry for swimming and wading is available just a hundred yards or so up the beach. No big deal.

The beach in this area has been subject to a lot of erosion in the last few years, which is another reason that it's gotten a "bad rap", but in the last couple of years it's started to come back (Thank you, Mother Nature), plus the Cayman government spent a ton of money on a huge beach restoration project in that exact area last December and it seems to be staying.

Here's a picture from the website taken in May of 2006. Keep in mind that they weren't open, therefore the seaweed and such weren't raked up in the morning as they would be now.

It will be fine. Have you traded into Plantation Village on a timeshare exchange?

Char

Thank you so much for the reply Char.

I am not trading in...I found it online as a rental. Is that not the case? Are they available to rent?

I just thought it might be helpful to mention that the rates at Plantation Village have stayed the same even though they did a 6 million dollar reno after Ivan. Also unless I'm wrong they are still the lowest on 7 mile beach. 2 pools (1 on the beach ), new tennis court, BBQs, renovated condos and more. Very nice.

Hello Leo! Welcome to the forum Smile ,

We have owned a timeshare at Plantation Village for over twenty years......I don't keep up with what the rental rates are, so I didn't realize that they had stayed the same, but I am certainly pleased with how they have handled all the renovations and insurance haggles since Ivan.....we're really excited to finally get to stay in our unit again this February.

Are you an owner? Have you stayed there since the reopening?

Gosh, Leo,

I don't know what to say. We are just timeshare owners, so we don't have any feel for what the condos are actually worth if someone wanted to buy one. That's the same size unit that we have a timeshare in, but I have no idea what they sell for.

Seems like a good price, and they are completely refurbished.

There is a little uncertain future, though.....all the timeshares will end in 2013 and 2015. 46 of the 70 units are timeshares (I think). So, I'm not sure what the property will be like after that......I don't know if all the timeshare units will then go up for sale or what.....

Are you an outright owner or a timeshare owner? Or do you just like staying there?

Outright owner. I just thought it might be info that could be shared. Jim Fraser is the listing Agent and so I thought you might have talked to him. I think both are on the 2nd floor and should be reno'd so it seems like a good deal to me also. When do you have your timeshare for.

Hi Leo,

We own #63 for weeks 8 and 9. The dates are in my trip profile.

As far as recommending good deals on properties for sale, we don't really get into that on this board. If anyone seems interested in buying property in Cayman we usually recommend that they contact James Bovell at Re/Max, who is an advertiser of the Cayman Activity Guide. There is a thread pertaining to this right here . I have seen Jim Fraser at Plantation Village many times, but I don't think I've ever spoken to him.....I think he interacts with the outright owners, like you, but not really the timeshare owners like I am. I have complete faith in everyone on the PV staff, so I'm sure he's great. It's just that since the advertisers are what make this Message Board possible for everyone, and they are the people that Joe can personally vouch for, we like to steer whatever business we can their way. Wink

We basically answer questions, share Cayman stories and give advice to fellow tourists looking for places to stay, restaurants to go to and activities that would be fun to do. We don't get too many questions about buying property. A few, but not too many.

So, which unit do you own, and have you been down their since the reopening? We weren't able to use ours for the last two years, of course, but being Cayman Lovers that we are, nothing could keep us away from our annual Cayman vacation, so we still went and just stayed somewhere else. At least that way, we could take a peek at our unit and see how it looked and how the remodeling was coming, so we've been in touch.

Char I own #44 and spent 3 weeks down there in the summer doing a few touch ups. Had a great time and must say the place really is in great shape. Maybe I'll see you there some time. Ask the girls at the front desk if i'm down when you are there.
