1031 Skateboards:
1031 Skates founder and long time pro street skater Kristian Svitak will be bringing some of his team down to Skate Cayman to hang out with the campers. Skate Cayman will be the final stop on the 1031 Skates summer tour. Kristian, along with 1031 Pros Chad Knight and Ben Raybourn and Ams Greg Harbour will all be at Black Pearl.
Kristian Svitek:
Raised in Cleveland, OH Kristian began skating in the summer of 1988. His first sponsor ever was Invisible Skateboards. In 2006 he and Chad Knight left Black Label and started 1031 Skateboards. Some other interesting about Kristian is that he plays drums in a rock-n-roll band called the Heartaches. Three years after starting 1031 Skateboards he started another company LandShark Wheels.
Chad Knight:
Raised in Westerville, OH at the age of 8 Chad began to skateboard. He was determine to prove to his brother that it was possible to charge down their parent’s driveway and make a turn at the bottom. Chad was sponsored by Sunsports (hometown local skate park) in 1989 at the age of 13. Although Chad was much younger then the other competitors and won most of the street contest and all the ramp contest that his local park hosted. He was crowned King of the Ramp for winning the mini-ramp contest series at Sunsports every year. In 1997 he turned pro. Chad and Kristian Svitak left Black Label in 2006 and started 1031 Skateboards. He was signed on as the second pro of 1031 Skateboards.
Ben Raybourn:
Born in Rosenberg, TX Ben began skating around 5 year old. The first company to sponsor Ben was his local skatepark Decks. Ben has good style, gets tons of speed when riding, skates padless and is still a kid. You never know what kind of trick Ben has a unique bag of tricks and knows how to keep it interesting.
If you haven’t signed up for Skate Cayman yet, there is still time! From now through August 21, some of the world’s most renowned professional and amateur skaters will descend on Grand Cayman for a completely distinctive camp experience.
Part of this year’s Cayman Summer Splash program, the camp is being put on by Black Pearl Skate Park and the Department of Tourism.
Anyone interested in signing up for Skate Cayman can call Black Pearl: Phone: 1-345-947-4161.
Skate Cayman offers hands-on instruction for campers Monday through Friday. Each week will be hosted by a different skate team or pro/am skater that will put their signature style on the camp. Throughout the summer, campers will have the opportunity to skate with the likes of Rune Glifberg, Brian Sumner, Josh Harmony, the Shut Skates team, living legend Duane Peters and many more. The camp is broken out by skill level and trained coaches will lead instruction throughout the day. Campers can sign up for a full week of camp or daily sessions.
Olympic Gold Medalist and Summer & Winter X Games Champion, Shaun White kicked off Skate Cayman on June 12, skating with local kids and campers during the day and returning later that night for a session under the lights at Black Pearl. The local skate community was out in full force to skate with Shaun, grab an autograph, and catch a glimpse of his signature skating style. However, it wasn’t all about skating for Shaun while he was in Cayman – Shaun and his family visited the Cayman Turtle Farm at Boatswain’s Beach, took a dip in the clear blue waters and swam with the stingrays at Stingray City, and tasted fresh local Caymanian cuisine.
Shaun White took a moment to pose with Mark Scotland, Minister of Sports, Dwayne Seymour and students from Prospect Primary School and performed tricks for the crowd
Week two brought a crew from the Mesh Skate Park in Orlando Florida. Chris Blake, Bob Wooten, Ryan Nix, Evan Smith, and Brett Peterson skated with campers, providing trick tips and pointers that improved their board skills on the exhilarating park. In addition to cameo appearances at Skate Cayman, Mesh came to work as they filmed footage for their upcoming video that is rumored to be their best skating to date.
Week three saw Bucky Lasek delight campers and local students with his impressive vert skills. For Bucky Lasek, becoming the number one vert skater in America was no easy feat. In his home town of Baltimore, MD, Bucky Lasek (whose real name is Charles) first picked up a skateboard at the age of 12 after his bike was stolen. Soon after he was competing in amateur contests and quickly climbed up the ranks as a professional skateboarder. Today he is considered one of the world’s most consistent vert skateboarders, with a contest repertoire that includes more difficult tricks than any other skater in competition.
Black Pearl will be lighting up the skate park on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the summer, thanks to the generosity of Caribbean Utilities Company who provided the lights. |
