Sometime between late Saturday evening (3 May) and the next morning someone broke into the iguana habitat at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, slaughtering six endangered blue iguanas and injuring two others.? Samantha Hicks, one of the distraught volunteers at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program (BIRP), spoke with Cayman Net News about the incident. ?We?ve never seen anything like this before."

That is so terrible. I am so sorry about your loss.

Those sick scumbags need to be dealt with severely!

What is being done to find out who did it?

Anyone know what the penalty is if they are caught? Hopefully its a lot more than some slap on the wrist.

Its simply a tragedy that there are some people out there that are able to do such horrible acts such as this. I just wish we lived in a better world for the sake of our children today. My son has lizards and iguanas as pets. I could never tell him this kind of news it would just break his heart. What a shame...

If you are looking for updates on the investigation, I guess I would just watch our news ticker as it flows by at the top of this page. I'm sure as soon as there is something to report, there will be an article in one of the newspapers. Our ticker feeds us the articles from the Cayman Net News.

Some people might be wondering about how to make a donation to the cause, and so I thought I'd post what I have found out. The National Trust of the Cayman Islands is one of the partners who works with the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme to ensure the survival of the endangered blue iguanas. Of course, no one could have ever anticipated this brutal attack and, so of course, this has set the program back considerably. Anyway, there are many people and companies on the island that have come forward, wanting to put up a reward, and the National Trust is the agency that is collecting those pledges. I believe that they already have pledges of over CI$10,000.

We don't usually post outside links, but I hope that Joe won't mind if I post the one that gives you the opportunity to donate to the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, either to add to the reward or to help with the added costs of dealing with this tragedy. CLICK HERE TO DONATE TO THE BLUE IGUANAS Select the Blue Iguana Recovery Program from the pull down menu.

If you prefer, you can contact the person in charge of donations at.

Let's hope they find the people who committed this horrible crime soon!

Char

Thanks Char. I actually get the news delievered to my E-mail address everyday and I will watch for updates.

We also purchased a couple of t-shirts while at the garden....just a little pricey but I know the proceeds go for a good cause. I'm really happy we bought them. I believe once they are gone, they are gone and they won't be making any more.

Thank you Char: I'll add the reply I received from the National Trust although I believe you already have all of the pertinent information posted:

Quote:
Dear Joe,

Thank you so much for your support.

We are in the process of collecting donations for the reward offered by Cayman Crime Stoppers, in partnership with the National Trust. The reward has been set at $10,000.00 and we have manage to collect $7,100.00 so far.

If [your members] would like to donate to the reward fund cheques can be made payable to The National Trust for the Cayman Islands and dropped off to our office in the Dart Park, South Sound or mailed to the address below. The reward monies will be held in an account for a period of six months, if we are not called upon in that time to pay out the reward then the money can either go toward the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme or if specified, be returned to the donor.

If [your members] would like to contribute to the Blue Iguana programme direct please stop by our office and we would be happy to help. Alternatively you can donate online at www.blueiguana.ky

Volunteer and fundraising enquires can be directed to sam@blueiguana.ky

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many thanks,

Caroline Key
