Construction work on the first-ever Mandarin Hotel in Grand Cayman is expected to get underway by year-end, six months past the scheduled commencement date, a source close to the company said.
At the start of 2006, Cayman Net News was informed by a local affiliate that the Mandarin would begin work in June on the Barefoot Beach in East End to raise a resort on the 10-acre site.
On the eve of the proposed start of the project, company officials said their Cayman property would in fact get off the ground by December with the completion date for the resort put at 2008.
No reasons were given for the delay, however, the officials denied reports from local sources that funding for the project had fallen through due to concerns over the Cayman investment climate.
Mandarin officials said the multi-million dollar project for Grand Cayman is fully alive and they were delighted to be doing business here.
The hotel is being billed as an intimate hideaway set on unspoiled 10-acre lands, which features a 950-foot stretch of pristine white sand on the eastern side of the Island.
All of the resort?s 114 lavish guest rooms and suites will feature expansive outdoor terraces and balconies providing panoramic ocean views, the company said.
According to Mandarin, the development would include 37 private residences providing an opportunity for ownership in this unparalleled island retreat.
In January 2006, Tourism Minister Hon Charles Clifford said he was thrilled at the news that the Island had secured another leading hotel chain with businesses in 17 countries.
?We?re very happy to have a Mandarin Oriental coming to Cayman. Now that we have the Ritz-Carlton we?re likely to see competition following competition,? he said.
The Minister said the company had identified a local contractor and he expected work on the hotel to begin in the coming months, given the commitment to have it ready next year.
