From AP:

Security increases at U.S. airports

NEW YORK ? U.S. air travelers poured out liquids, opened their bags for inspection and endured long waits Thursday as airports heightened security and some flights were canceled or delayed after the discovery of a terror plot aimed at airlines traveling from Britain to the United States.

The airlines targeted included United Airlines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc., two counterterrorism officials said Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

"This is very, very serious, this is the real deal," said Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

King said he was briefed on the case late Wednesday by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, and "it was the most concerned I have ever heard him."

American canceled three London-bound morning flights from Chicago, Boston and New York to accommodate delays at London's Heathrow airport, spokesman John Hotard said. To balance the cancellations, the airline also dropped three afternoon or evening flights from London to U.S. cities, Hotard said.

The remaining 13 flights in each direction were expected to run from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours late. The cancellations were due to scheduling delays and not because of possible threats to the flights, Hotard said.

"We're going to be flying out of Heathrow today," he said. "It's just that because it's so congested right now."

Most European carriers canceled flights to Heathrow because of the massive delays created by strict new regulations banning most hand baggage.

The U.S. government raised its threat warning to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States and raised slightly the alert for all flights coming or going from the U.S.

It is the first time the red alert level in the Homeland Security warning system has been invoked, although there have been brief periods in the past when the orange level was applied. Homeland Security defines the red alert as designating a "severe risk of terrorist attacks."

The government said it was banning liquids including beverages, hair gels and lotions from flights, explaining only that liquids emerged as a risk from the investigation in Britain.

Passengers complied at the Kennedy airport terminal housing British Airways, throwing those and other products into bins.

At Dulles International Airport outside Washington, Homeland Security put up hastily printed signs warning passengers in all-red capital letters, "No liquid or gels permitted beyond security." The signs were taped up at ticket counters as well as the security checkpoints.

Passengers dumped liquids into large trash cans that were being emptied every couple minutes. People threw away water bottles, juice boxes, makeup and even a bottle of tequila.

At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where American is based, extra police and dog units were sent out overnight to patrol terminals and parking garages, airport spokesman Ken Capps said.

Passengers appeared to be moving smoothly through checkpoints, he said.

At Chicago airports, the terror alert level was raised to orange, requiring all bags to be screened. Chicago aviation commissioner Nuria Fernandez said the only exceptions to the ban on liquids would be breast milk and fruit juices for small and nursing children. She urged passengers to arrive early for flights and to consider not bringing carryon luggage.

Some passengers were surprised by the ban on flying with liquids at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Baby formula and medicine had to be presented for inspection.

The terror plot and flight cancellations have "not yet" caused any disruption at Los Angeles International Airport, airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said early Thursday.

She declined to comment on whether airport officials have heightened security because of the raised threat alert, but said the airport typically followed any special directives from federal authorities.

Delta Air Lines spokesman Anthony Black said Thursday morning that operations would continue normally and there would be no flight cancellations. But Delta was expecting delays on flights coming from the United Kingdom because of heightened security there, Black said.

What about carry-ons from Cayman to the U.S.?

They are not allowing any from the U.K. Does anyone know if they will be allowing them from Cayman.

I really don't want to check my laptop and Video camera. Confused

I just don't trust those baggage handlers. Rolling Eyes

Capt Ron - The Cayman Islands are considered a crown colony but not subject to the laws of the UK so I doubt there will be any additional carry on restrictions beyond the liquids that are now prohibited globally.

Capt Ron,

Since this is such a recent development, it is uncertain whether airline procedures/regulations may subsequently change.

I'd suggest contacting your airline carrier and/or checking the US Transportation Security Administration website for updates prior to you trip.

Should such restrictions remain in effect for your planned trip, thus requiring your laptop and video camera be placed in checked luggage, then advise the airline when you check the bag(s) as that will affect the airline's limitation of liability for lost or damaged personal property.

I'd also recommend a good TSA compliant lock for any bags containing such carefully packed equipment.

As a person who lived through 9/11 (working in New York) I can tell you that I panicked when I heard this news today. My first thought was how horrible of a trip it will be getting to Cayman...then I thought of the end result - Paradise.

All I can say is that for anyone who is concerned as I am - the truth of the matter is NOW is the 'best time' for safe flights. Security at it's highest; the public on alert, etc.

***As for the baggage handlers - yes, they can be (are Sad ) rough and abrasive with our luggage. BUT REST ASSURED...they are being scrutinzed just as much as the passengers. They KNOW they will be the first place we look if items are damaged and/or stolen.

Just go to the airport and expect long security line delays. I would definately give up a couple of extra hours in line, than compromise my security.

GOD BLESS US ALL!

GOD BLESS US ALL!

So, if you are leaving Cayman and you buy duty free rum or perfume at the duty free area of the airport (Past security) will they check it for you as checked baggage? I can't imagine leaving without RUM!

This had to happen the week before I'm leaving!!! Well, with only 5 days to go, I'm not going to let a little thing like additional security get me down. I'll just re-arrange the packing plans and move on. It'll all be worth it once I'm on the beach relaxing!

Yep...5 DAYS TO GO!!!!

Anything liquid must be in your checked luggage. So if they use liquid foundation, for example, it cannot be in a carry on. Same with perfume and deodorant. If your not sure, just make sure it's in your checked luggage.

Patricia,

By the time you go it might all have changed again. As far as make up goes, at the moment that is not allowed. They were taking it off people yesterday at US airports.

It must all be in your checked bags.

Also, according to ABC News, no carry on bags with wheels are allowed from Newark Airport.

Hubby will fly back into Newark tonight from his travels so I will try to get more info from him as to what its like at the airports. He did 2 flights yesterday and watched many, many items being removed from passengers. Luckliy, he only had his computer bag with him.

For now, there are 2 security check points. The first being just after you check in and then just before you board the aircraft. It all takes time so pack a lot of patience.

If you're flying FROM grand Cayman TO the UK (aboard british irways) then yuo have to stick with the Uk guidelines... no carryons, no nothing other than a small purse or wallet and glasses but no cases, if yuo happen to wear glasses. There are two security checks now, ne on yuor way into the departures lounge and then another as yuo head towards the plane.

If you are flying an american carrier (or cayman airways) to the US then the US guidelines prevail which (at the moment) is the no liquids, no gels, no shampoo, suntan lotion, etc rule. That means your laptop, ipod, PSp, gameboy, camera etc is OK.

As always, rules are changing everytime someone else thinks something up, so the best bet is to contact your specific carrier the day before you leave. Also dont leave it til the last minute as the call centers are REALLY BUSY with everyone calling to ask the same tihings, so get a cup of coffee, get a pillow and a comfy chair and if yuo have one, a headset and wait it out in comfort, if not in style wink

-M

It's just a guess but considering that Rum is a liquid and flammable I would bet no.
