From Cayman Net News:

Alcohol, dancing approved for Turtle Farm

Kenneth Hydes

Managing Director of

Boatswain's Beach

PLANS for Boatswain's Beach, formerly Cayman Turtle Farm, to serve alcohol and music to its customers got the green light from the Liquor Licensing Board on Thursday, 3 August.

The Liquor Licensing Board of Grand Cayman approved the application for a Temporary Liquor Licence and Music and Dancing Licence for the 825 NW Point Road, West Bay Road property.

Accordingly, the life of the temporary liquor licence expires on 30 September, which is the end of the annual licence period.

Managing Director of Boatswain's Beach Kenneth Hydes, in whose name the licence is granted, put forward the company's case at the extraordinary meeting at the Customs Headquarters.

Mr Hydes said that his company is setting up three different restaurants and bars for guests to the popular tourist attraction on the western end of the Island.

"It was important for us to maximise the benefits of what we have by having a liquor licence," he said to the board.

He said that alcoholic beverages would be served daily at all three restaurants and bars, which were primarily outdoor, grill and fine dining.

He said the facilities also welcomed the business of residents as well as tourists and promised that there would be daily cultural entertainment to complement the food and drink.

Members of the Liquor Licensing Board questioned Mr Hydes about the areas on the property where his company would allow the consumption of alcohol.

Mr Hydes said that some areas may be designated for that purpose and security officers would police the property.

One board member advised the Managing Director to have adequate signage to establish control on alcohol drinking spots if the liquor licence was granted.

Another concern raised by the board was that of possible underage drinking, which has been spotted at some locations on the Island.

Some members suggested giving coloured wristbands to underage guests as is done by cruise ships that want to keep the youngsters from drinking alcohol.

Bar attendants could be an important tool in the reduction of that occurrence, one member noted.

On the question of a possible control mechanism between the three bars, Mr Hydes said that would be difficult given the large number of guests expected at Boatswain's Beach during the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association conference here in October.

Mr Hydes gave the meeting his undertaking that alcohol would be served in plastic glasses and not in breakable bottles.

Boatswain's Beach personnel will run all three restaurants and bar, he told the meeting.

The hours granted for liquor sales by the Liquor Licensing Board were Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 1:00 am and 9:00 am to midnight on Saturdays and 11:00 am to midnight on Sundays.

The licences, according to the board, covers only the facility on the landside, meaning that there will be no alcohol sold on the seaside of the property.

At the Thursday meeting ratification of seven decisions were made by the Chairman Mitchell Welds.

There was a change of licensee of a Retail Liquor Licence to Davin G Ebanks, a change of licensee of a Package Liquor Licence to Judy Deslandes, and a change of licensee of a Retail Liquor Licence and Music and Dance Licence to Horace DuQuesnay.

Don Seymour obtained a change of location of a Retail Liquor Licence and a Package Liquor Licence to The Strand, while Eduardo Bodden received a change of location of a Distributor Liquor Licence to Mini Warehouse II.

The Board Chairman also ratified a change of location of a Retail Liquor Licence and a Music and Dance Licence to Paradise Sushi at the Seven Mile Shops.

The Liquor Licensing Board of Grand Cayman is scheduled to meet on 14 September 2006 for a quarterly meeting.

Yuk, I hate that. Maybe it will all be for the better of the community though, if a community likes bars. At least you don't have Casinos moving in like here in Mississippi.
